I will go and vote for Lark Ascending, I think. I like it. Thanks for flagging it up!
Edited to add - Done!

I love The Lark Ascending too!

@Skodacool what do you prefer?

Gingernaut · 13/01/2025 23:19

Fantasia on a theme by Thomas Tallis it is then....

clary · 13/01/2025 23:35

Ah I am not a fan of this either, but I do love RVW's English Folksong Suite so I might vote for that. It never does very well tho.

Juliagreeneyes · 13/01/2025 23:38

Nothing wrong with a bit of ol’ RVW. Wouldn’t you prefer the Lark to Pachelbel’s Canon or Nessun Dorma?

No. I like both of those but my number one is Elizabethan Serenade. You can vote for three in the ballot 😀

It’s a tough choice, I like so many but I’ve voted for Elizabethan Serenade as my top choice. I just find Lark Ascending very frustrating because it doesn’t go anywhere. I have to say that there isn’t much of Vaughan Williams that I like.

Arrgh @Skodacool there isn’t a reaction for noooooo
Cannot stand Ronald Bilge

MoonWoman69 · 13/01/2025 23:51

It was one of my mums favourite pieces and I had it as the quiet reflection piece at her funeral. It stays for me I'm afraid!

Overtheatlantic · 13/01/2025 23:55

Fantasia is a nicer piece to be sure.

Joyfulspringflowers · 14/01/2025 07:16

I used to quite like The Lark but I think its a bit boring when the same piece is number one repeatedly.

There are so many wonderful pieces to choose from it's very difficult to pick three.

Being a big Beethoven fan I usually go for The Pastoral symphony. And I love Saint- Saen's Organ Symphony so I'll vote for that again. I haven't decided on the third yet.

clary · 14/01/2025 07:17

tbf I think Rach 2 has been number 1 for the last two years? Certainly last year :)

JoanChitty · 14/01/2025 07:58

The banks of green willows by George Butterworth , that’s my number one.

FraterculaArctica · 14/01/2025 08:07

Thumbs up for one of the best thread titles I've seen in ages! DH and I cannot stand the awful Lark!

My tastes are pretty mainstream but all about the piano, so I’ll be voting Beethoven 5 and Mozart 21. I do love listening to the countdown over the Easter weekend

Yes it does, like a lark ascending.Grin

Maybe it doesn't deserve top spot musically but it's a piece that makes many people happy. Just thinking about it, I'm visualising sunlit moors and shorelines.

clary · 14/01/2025 10:38

Ooh @EveryoneKnowsJuanita i love the emperor too, saw it live twice last year

TribulationPeriwinkle · 14/01/2025 11:01

I like the Lark, but the whole hall of fame thing is so naff!

That’s exactly how I feel! Much of Vaughan Williams work has that effect on me 😒
