I've always hated my name, it's Kelsey. I think it's pretty ugly, a bit 90's chav, and I hate saying it, I don't what I'd prefer I just don't like it, does anyone else hate theirs?

OP posts:
bluefingertips · 24/11/2024 19:57

I should imagine there will soon be quite a lot of young adults with their extremely dated 'unique names' which they will also hate.

If you don't like your name, why not take the nickname Kelly or something?

SilverBlueRabbit · 24/11/2024 20:00

Can take or leave mine. Standard name from the early 1970s that every second person had- along the whole Sharon / Karen line.

If i really hated it thought I would change it. I have a secret alter ego name that I like, but is a bit out there. One day I may change it to that.

Jakadaal · 24/11/2024 20:03

Hate my name - 60s name, long and hard to spell (some), think USA presidents wife who went on to marry a Greek millionaire 😝 I think it sounds very harsh and dated. I always wanted a short, pretty feminine name like Lucy or Emma

DrZaraCarmichael · 24/11/2024 20:04

Dislike it. It is old fashioned and does not fit with my generation. My parents did not give me a middle name and so I don't have that option either.

And at the age of 52, it'd be weird to change it.

cindertoffeeapple · 24/11/2024 20:05

I hate my name - it’s very bland and boring. I use a nickname form that I much prefer and people are always surprised when they discover what my actual legal name is.

Can be a pain sometimes. Some systems aren’t set up to accept nicknames. A while ago I was having weekly hospital treatment and couldn’t get them to add a ‘known as’ name so they kept calling my horrible real name. At one point when I pushed them to change it they accidentally changed my surname instead. Hate getting Trainline emails with that name on but it has to match my railcard.

I always use my nickname when applying for new jobs even if there’s a ‘preferred name’ field, experience says not to take the risk of being set up in the IT system with a name I don’t want to use. This has never been an issue even in government.

So, all a bit annoying. Really envy people who like their names.

Username481 · 24/11/2024 20:05

I do. It's Abi (Abigail). I really like it, and feel like my mother picked well - I was born mid-70s when it wasn't super popular, it seemed to hit a peak in the early 2000s. I like that it wasn't that common when I was a child, but also that it did pick up later, but never so popular that people are bored of hearing it.

mnahmnah · 24/11/2024 20:07

I have always like my name. But, now at 45, I’m becoming aware that it was very much of the 70s and 80s and probably sounds old to people younger than me!

LightSpeeds · 24/11/2024 20:08

I'm not sure. It's not very common and I've always erred on the side of not really liking it. But it's ok.

My surname, I believe, is unique.

DrZaraCarmichael · 24/11/2024 20:08

On the flip side - my name is unusual, and in combination with my equally unusual (yet short and easy to spell) surname, I am unique. There is only one person with my name anywhere in the world which is useful in a professional sense as I am self-employed and clients come to me.

SkylarH · 24/11/2024 20:11

Sadly, I've always disliked it and thought it dated.

It's Paula.

I was really eager to choose names for my kids that were more modern and fun, (but still well thought of).

pancakestastelikecrepe · 24/11/2024 20:13

I like my name. What's annoying is the constant misspelling and mispronunciation, especially when once corrected, some insist on pronouncing it their way!
It's Corinne - pronounced Co-rin.
Not C'rin, C'reen, or Coreeen 🙄

LePetitMaman · 24/11/2024 20:14

Mines horrible. Yours is too, so sorry OP. Our parents have a lot to answer for 😁 I was nearly Elisa, which is only marginally better, but at least I don't know another 20 of them.

DC have lovely names imho. Eldest DS very classic and biblical, both first and middle names. DD, very french, pretty, frilly first name and fairy like middle names. Littlest DS strong, handsome first name with classic middle name.

I hope they don't hate them as adults, but you never know.

ShootyBumPain · 24/11/2024 20:15

I like mine, it's Eleanor. I hated it when I was a kid because it was an 'old lady name' to a child's ears and I wanted to be a Sarah or a Louise. I love it now though.

Crushed23 · 24/11/2024 20:18

Yes, I love mine.

I've been told I 'look like' my name.

Hate my surname though, and would definitely change it if I ever got married.

Tiggiwinklescousin · 24/11/2024 20:18

My name, according to a previous poster, is pretty and feminine. I am neither. I've lost count of the times I've told someone my name and they've said "my mum/neighbour/hairdresser has a lovely dopey old golden retriever called that". Coupled with my married surname, (which always illicits a hopeful "any relation?"), I'm fairly meh about my name. I genuinely sound like a hedgehogs cousin.

SallyWD · 24/11/2024 20:18

I love mine! My parents did a good job. I've never met anyone with my name and I love feeling unique. As a child I wish I had a more normal, common name but now I love being the only one.
It's not a silly, pretentious name. It's sensible, simple, feminine but strong. Even though my name is so rare everyone seems to have heard of it and can spell it.

Ohhh I love your name. Always makes me think of ballerinas, women in Chanel suits and of course the incredibly chic first lady in the pill box hats. Although it must be a bugger to learn to spell as a wee child.

I was named after the Mary Poppins actress which was all well and good until Ali G and Shaking Stevens sang about me. I've come to terms with it now and tell myself it's French and pretty....not sure anyone else agrees though..

Itjustkeepsoncoming · 24/11/2024 20:19

I hate the full version of my name, and go by a shortened version of it (which I can cope with).
Something along the lines of Victoria/ Vicky - a similar style name.

I think I associate my full name with formal situations.
Family and friends have only ever called me the shortened version.

I didn't even know that I had a longer formal name until I started infant school as I'd only ever been known as the shorter name.
The teacher called the register and I didn't answer as I thought it was someone else.

I think Paula is a lovely name! Nicer than Pauline.

Newdoggo · 24/11/2024 20:22

I hate people calling me by my full first name as it was always my 'naughty name' when Mum gave me a bollocking, she has since died so it feels weird and annoys me when anyone else uses it, I don't like the half shortening of my name (think Forest Gump) so I just use the first 3 letters anything else just doesn't suit me. I do like my name though as it is versatile

Itjustkeepsoncoming · 24/11/2024 20:24

I'm so pleased though that my daughter (now a young adult) loves her name.
I chose well for her.

Arlanymor · 24/11/2024 20:25

I hate my first name - to explain, I don’t hate the name in and of itself, and have lovely people in my life with that name, but it’s never connected with me for some reason.

But since birth I’ve been called by my middle name which I absolutely love. It’s quite common in Wales to go by your middle name.

When I got divorced and legally changed my name back to my maiden name I really wrestled with dropping my first name, but I have the same initials as my dad and didn’t want to upset him.

In all honestly I have genuinely thought about changing my first name so that the initials are the same, but getting rid of this name that means nothing to me. I’m 50 in just over four years, I think I might do it then.

YesPleaseMary · 24/11/2024 20:26

@Newdoggo snap!!

I think we may possibly have the same name.

BibbityBobbityToo · 24/11/2024 20:27

I'm an 80's kid with a 70's name, everyone I meet with the same name as me is at least 10 years older. Guess I'm used to it now but hated it as a child.
