I've always hated my name, it's Kelsey. I think it's pretty ugly, a bit 90's chav, and I hate saying it, I don't what I'd prefer I just don't like it, does anyone else hate theirs?

I feel like it's quite a normal thing to dislike your own name, however if it makes you feel better no one else cares about our names as much as ourselves! No one is judging or even remotely interested to be honest, they're too busy noticing our sparkling personalities! I've always found my name to be ridiculously boring, even my last name (Smith) makes me feel beyond full, which I think is why I've chosen slightly more unique names for my own children. I totally get where you're coming from though!

Dull not full! 😂

I like mine, it's Eleanor. I hated it when I was a kid because it was an 'old lady name' to a child's ears and I wanted to be a Sarah or a Louise. I love it now though.

Mine's of a similar style - often recommended as an elegant or 'posh' name on MN. I really hated it as a child, it just seemed so adult and uncool, but love it now.

It probably helps that I've never been cool 😂

SardinesOnGingerbread · 24/11/2024 20:48

Love mine. Very popular in 70s, uncommon now. Reasonably short, easy to spell.

TubeScreamer · 24/11/2024 20:49

Yes. There’s no name I’d rather have.

VacuumPacked · 24/11/2024 20:50

@CremeEggThief
I have one of those, born 1979, went to 3 different infant/ primary schools, 2 senior schools, a 6th form college then 2 Universities, never another same name, now they are everywhere!

Rowgtfc72 · 24/11/2024 20:50

Couldn't stand my name as a kid. I was shy and it was unusual and made me stand out.
Now I guess I don't mind it.
My Sunday name is Rowena. Most people call me Row.
My brother lucked out with Darrell.

I saw my name in the baby name threads described as an old lady name, 😅. I've grown to like it. There were three of us with the same name in my highschool class, it was very common. Mind you there was a stage when I was 5 I wanted to be called Star. Never took off with my parents

I will almost bet we have the same first name! I also wanted to be called Star, but at 15!

Scribblydoo · 24/11/2024 20:52

@SardinesOnGingerbread ...well as adults we can change our names. We could be the Stars of the nursing home!

I hated my name as a child and I just about tolerate it now, there's a few shortened versions of it I've used.
Everyone else seems to love the name, it's just not up my street.
It's Frances.

Sorry, I really like that name too!

TabloidFootprints · 24/11/2024 20:55

I’ve always loved my name, it’s not uncommon (more common now) but I have always been the only one with the name throughout my time at school in the 80s and college in the 90s and workplace. Timeless classic, I’d say, with plenty of opportunities for shortened versions (it’s the name of the spider in the children’s book). There’s no other name I’d rather have.

sanityisamyth · 24/11/2024 20:56

I neither like nor dislike it. There are lots of names a don't like, so I'm grateful I'm not called any of those, and there aren't many names that I really really love so things could be worse!

TimPat · 24/11/2024 20:56

It's a boring bog standard 80's name. It's fine I don't hate it but it's meh. Think along the lines of Laura, Nicola,
Emma.

elQuintoConyo · 24/11/2024 21:07

I love my name, both first and surname. My middle name is very of it's time (70s) and a bit naff. However, I live in Spain and my first name is still used at all ages, so I've met many. My middle name sounds lovely in Spanish. And luckily they can pronounce my surname easier that English speakers. So, all-in-all I got very lucky!

My name's a classic, popular in the 70s, but making a comeback. It's biblical, which helps.

I do. It's Abi (Abigail). I really like it, and feel like my mother picked well - I was born mid-70s when it wasn't super popular, it seemed to hit a peak in the early 2000s. I like that it wasn't that common when I was a child, but also that it did pick up later, but never so popular that people are bored of hearing it.

I was born mid 70's and had 2 Abigails in my class at primary school.

As a child I always wanted to be called Abigail! I have no idea why or where I even heard the name.
I used to hate my name. For a while as a child I tried to go by both my first and middle name (I thought the two together made me sound more interesting) but since my first name has 3 syllables it was never going to work. Now I'm basically indifferent to my name. I still don't like it but don't actively hate it either. It just kind of is.

Well, my parents did the weirdest thing in the world when they named me in 1971.

They called me Lily Grace

So yes, I have the same name, in my 50s, as all the 3 year olds round here Grin

ramron · 24/11/2024 21:33

I love mine. Only ever met one other person with the same name, think 80s American soap

TidyDancer · 24/11/2024 21:33

Yes I love my name. My parents chose me a good one. It's one of the names that doesn't immediately date me to being born in a particular decade. Has been used in the royal family yet has never made it near the top of any baby name list and I've only ever met a few over the years.

pointlesspoints · 24/11/2024 21:39

I do but I chose it myself

findingmel · 24/11/2024 21:44

I hate mine. It always seemed old-fashioned even when I was a child in the 70s. There are various spellings and no one spells it correctly, or they assume it's a shortened version of another name, which add to my loathing of it!

GreenMarigold · 24/11/2024 21:45

I don’t like my name. The long version is ok but it’s a bit of a mouthful and everyone shortens it without asking.

Pilgrimgirl · 24/11/2024 21:49

I've also been told I "look like" my name. I used to dislike it but since losing my darling mum, who chose it, I've grown to love it as, for a couple of reasons, it's a link to her.

carolinestowcrat · 24/11/2024 21:53

As my user name suggests, it's Caroline. It's actually hyphenated with another classic and v. traditional name but I dropped the hyphen long ago. Am only ever called by it when I'm in trouble or my brother is trying to wind me up.

Growing up, I thought Caroline was boring and longed to be named something more exciting. (Funnily enough, Nigella Lawson always longed to be called Caroline.) Have grown into the name and it really suits me.

teatoast8 · 24/11/2024 21:55

I like mine
