I've always hated my name, it's Kelsey. I think it's pretty ugly, a bit 90's chav, and I hate saying it, I don't what I'd prefer I just don't like it, does anyone else hate theirs?

My name, according to a previous poster, is pretty and feminine. I am neither. I've lost count of the times I've told someone my name and they've said "my mum/neighbour/hairdresser has a lovely dopey old golden retriever called that". Coupled with my married surname, (which always illicits a hopeful "any relation?"), I'm fairly meh about my name. I genuinely sound like a hedgehogs cousin.

Oh ‘hedgehog’s cousin’ - bless you!

Donotlike · 24/11/2024 20:28

I don't like mine. It's Ceri which is a perfectly fine Welsh name but I have always lived in England (Welsh parents). It sounds chavvy here and I have to spell it out all the time. Many people people assume my parents gave me a made up 'unique' spelling of Kerry.

Dislike it. It is old fashioned and does not fit with my generation. My parents did not give me a middle name and so I don't have that option either.

And at the age of 52, it'd be weird to change it.

No it wouldn’t! I’m genuinely thinking of changing my first name for my 50th. Although it wouldn’t be the name by which I am known as I go by my middle name and have since birth, so maybe that’s the difference? But do what works for you! Life is too short and all that.

NCnumber3 · 24/11/2024 20:30

My first name is great. Unusual without being weird. I hated it as a kid in a class full of Claires, Louises etc.

Middle name should have stayed in Dynasty.

I really like Ceri, I have two in my life but they are both male.

My family moved to England when I was small, so I do understand. Trying to explain Rhian to people and then just giving up…

Amalala · 24/11/2024 20:30

Claire. Bog standard 70s/80s name but quite like the fact it’s never ‘come back’, easy to spell, everyone’s heard of it etc. Will be classy old lady with lots of other old ladies of same name.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 24/11/2024 20:32

Yes and No

I like that it's unusual I don't like that both it and the nickname I use both get mangled in pronunciation and that I often get a variation on my name that is not my name and I have to answer to it.

RandomMess · 24/11/2024 20:35

Hate it wasn't common but very dated and people insist on abbreviating it which I detest even more - I have a visceral reaction to the shortening.

Scribblydoo · 24/11/2024 20:36

I saw my name in the baby name threads described as an old lady name, 😅. I've grown to like it. There were three of us with the same name in my highschool class, it was very common. Mind you there was a stage when I was 5 I wanted to be called Star. Never took off with my parents

ForgettingMeNot · 24/11/2024 20:38

If you ask anyone what girls name gives you a red flag, that's me.🥺

And my middle name added to it as if one name drives me insane 😡

YouveGotNoBloodyIdea · 24/11/2024 20:39

Yes I do

It's "of its time" - 1950's and I only ever meet women of my age who have it.

The thing I don't much like is that it's short - think something like Lynne- so I couldn't do much with it in terms of interesting alternatives.

I made sure my DDs had long names that they could shorten in lots of different ways.

Sciaticargh · 24/11/2024 20:39

My name is Ruth, I love it. People who know me well call me Ruthie and people who know me very very well call me Rue.

nc1993 · 24/11/2024 20:39

I hated my name as a child and I just about tolerate it now, there's a few shortened versions of it I've used.
Everyone else seems to love the name, it's just not up my street.
It's Frances.

That’s one of my all time favourites names

CremeEggThief · 24/11/2024 20:42

I love mine, but I don't think that's common!

PermanentTemporary · 24/11/2024 20:42

I love my name. It's classic, well known, feminine. It was very posh when I was little but it's much less unusual now which is nice for me. It's also flexible with some pretty nicknames. I use a slightly unusual version of one of those.

I really like Kelsey, I think it's a great name, but I also think that anyone who really dislikes their name should just go ahead and change it. If you're determined about it, I think it would work fine. Pick something that feels like you, pick a date and just do it. You only get one life!

TinyMouseTheatre · 24/11/2024 20:42

Mine is awful. Was very much of its time and there were 5 of us in the class all the through Primary school.

My DM has always suffered with a severe lack of imagination though Grin

RosesAndHellebores · 24/11/2024 20:43

Nope. Hate it. Not saying it as it is very uncommon and will be outing.

Thewalrusandthecarpenter · 24/11/2024 20:43

I like my name and I've never met another one. Mumsnet would hate it as it's hyphenated (not Mae or anything modern).

I used to want to be Helen or Emma in my youth though.

PrivacyPussyPasta · 24/11/2024 20:43

I hate my name, it's a very 80s name, not aged well at all. I've only ever met a couple others, they hated it too.

The perils of having teenage parents in the 80s.

CremeEggThief · 24/11/2024 20:44

Mine has been very popular for the last 20 or so years, but it wasn't at all at the time I was born in the late 70s.

Hepzibar · 24/11/2024 20:46

It's Tracey. Enough said. Detest it. Embarrassed by it.

Didn't have enough confidence when I was younger to change it or at least get people to call me something else.

Nottodaygoaway · 24/11/2024 20:47

Mine is ok. It was popular in the late 1970s. I went to school with two other (names the same) so my parents obviously didn't go for unique.

Originally my mum wanted my middle name to be Marie (Mary is a family name but she considered it archaic) but thankfully my dad overruled her with another popular 70s name, Louise. I do not like Marie.

Livvysmumhasgotitgoingon · 24/11/2024 20:47

I feel like it's quite a normal thing to dislike your own name, however if it makes you feel better no one else cares about our names as much as ourselves! No one is judging or even remotely interested to be honest, they're too busy noticing our sparkling personalities! I've always found my name to be ridiculously boring, even my last name (Smith) makes me feel beyond full, which I think is why I've chosen slightly more unique names for my own children. I totally get where you're coming from though!

Heatherbell1978 · 24/11/2024 20:47

Don't like mine. It's quite unusual but also only ever belongs to middle aged and older Scottish women. Very hard sounding. But it is what it is.
