I noticed on my canvas account that there was anextra module
I spoke to the uni about this&it got added on but thelecture is at 9am and now it’s 2 months afterSeptember there is no spaces left in the beforeschool club for my son so last week I turned up halfan hour late, got to the class and there’s no teacherin there after the module was added 6 weeks late.
I went into class today for the first time and irs nowNovember. The teacher has offered me no help, andtold me I need to catch up online and that there’s nopoint in me being there today because I will beconfused as to what’s going on.
I recorded the conversation as a lone female in theroom with a man who was already calling me a liarsaying that I didn’t turn up last week and no one elsedid so he went home. Will I get in trouble for this if Iuse it as evidence for the way he was speaking tome? He was saying I’m willing to put no effort inwhen I was literally asking for extra help😔 I was onlyhalf an hour late if that, he said he waited an hour.
I’m really stressing out, I’m being offered no supportand don’t know what to do to take this further theassignment is due in January and I’ve missed around18 hours. Another tutor has offered to help me butshe can only do two sessions with me

Have you tried catching up online?

Have you spoken to the programme lead?

My daughter had this in her first degree, they forgot to teach a whole Year 3 module and realised months late. DD was course rep and wrote a massive complaint. Half the cohort failed their last (rushed) assignment and weren't going to get a degree. Dd ended up having a meeting with the director of student experience and the whole cohort had their work remarked (all passed) and everyone was given 1k compensation.

So forgetting to teach a module is a big fuck up. Use your course rep and also the student's union to help with any complaint but I'd speak to the programme lead first.

When did it get added?

Brananan · 05/11/2024 07:21

Have you done what he said and caught up online? If not then there isn't much else they can do to help.

I find it a bit troubling that you mention being a single woman alone with a man - are you planning to report him rather than just do the catching up?

Anotherfrozenpizzafortea · 05/11/2024 07:31

I wouldn't wait 10 minutes for a student. 'Only half an hour late'? Don't be ridiculous, that's half the session, as well as being 2 months late starting.

You need to speak to the course admin team and timetabling. If there is proof that you were only added to the module after 2 months you will certainly have a case for mitigation or something extension.

But your timekeeping needs addressing!

Get in contact with the student Union advice centre and ask for their support. They will advocate for you if you need them to but will certainly advise what steps you should be taking to sort this out.

My time keeping needs addressing? Did you read the post? If they had told me at the start of the semester I could’ve booked my son into before school club when I was offered? How can I possibly be at uni for 9 and drop my son off at 8.55?

How is half an hour half of the session when the session is 3 hours luv?

A three hour lecture? No wonder nobody else turned up.

Where is this?

3 hours is a standard lecture where I teach. I do let the students have a coffee break mid lecture for 15/20 mins 😁

You can’t obviously but it’s your issue to sort out. You need to find a way of both catching up, and getting to every other lecture to show willing. Time spent doing that is a better use of your time rather than posting here. Good luck.

From your post it sounds as if the university missed adding you to the module at the start of term and have added you late so you have missed half the sessions.

I would talk to your tutor or the head of your course and ask to either be allowed to take the module at a later date or to have it removed from the requirements for your degree. The university shouldn't be adding you to something that late into the term. This isn't like when I was at university, nowadays you are paying a fortune in tuition and they need to enable you to get the education you are paying for, not add you to something when half of what you are paying for has already passed you by.
