No big deal. Just after your opinion. Today is Tuesday 22nd October 2024, what is the date next Saturday?

My daughter has said she's coming to see me next Saturday but apparently I'm wrong in thinking that will be the 26th October she means the 2nd November. To her If she was coming on the 26th of October she would have said she was visiting this Saturday. We have gone around in silly circles on this. Like i said no big deal just a bit of light hearted chat.

So she is visiting the Saturday after next. Next Saturday obviously is October 26th.

Littletreefrog · 22/10/2024 22:46

I'm with your Daughter 'this Saturday" is 26th 'next Saturday' is the 2nd

TheShellBeach · 22/10/2024 22:47

Agree with your daughter.
Next Saturday refers to 2nd November.

terriblyangryattimes · 22/10/2024 22:47

I'm with your daughter too. The Saturday coming is 'this' Saturday and the one after is 'next'

BeBesideTheSea · 22/10/2024 22:49

I agree with your daughter. DH agrees with you. We always have to clarify to ensure we are talking about the same day!

DappledThings · 22/10/2024 22:49

There is no right or wrong answer. Next Saturday to me could be 26th October or 2nd November. It's always a confusing phrase and always worth double-checking.

In my head "next" becomes "this" when it's about 4 days away. So right now next Wednesday means the 30th October and 23rd October is "this Wednesday". By about Saturday "this Wednesday" will mean the 26th and "next Wednesday" would the 6th November.

But I never use the phrase because it's so ambiguous.

Scutterbug · 22/10/2024 23:00

I also agree with your daughter. This Saturday is the one coming up, next sat is the one after!

Thingsthatgo · 22/10/2024 23:03

In theory I agree with your daughter, but, and this is important, it depends whether she put the emphasis on the word 'next' or the word 'Saturday' Grin

ZestFest · 22/10/2024 23:08

I also say "this Saturday" or "this coming Saturday" to mean the one that will happen next! 😆And so "next Saturday" is the Saturday after that one!

My Swedish DH is perpetually confused

anotherlevel · 22/10/2024 23:13

Agree with your daughter. Next Saturday is 2/11 and this Saturday is 26/10.

9ToGoal · 22/10/2024 23:13

Agree with daughter, so does boyfriend. As soon as last Saturday (the 19th) was over, November 2nd became next Saturday.

DeireadhFomhair · 22/10/2024 23:15

Another agreeing with daughter ✅️

Perfectlove · 22/10/2024 23:18

Agree with daughter.

HappiestSleeping · 22/10/2024 23:24

This Saturday is the Saturday of this week, which is 26th. Next Saturday is the Saturday of the forthcoming (next) week, which is 2nd November.

Following the same rules, this Monday is in fact yesterday, and next Monday is 28th.

AutumnLeaves24 · 22/10/2024 23:29

I usually need the full context to decide. But I think generally once you hit Monday, next Saturday is the one after the coming weekend(so the 2nd in this case!). But I always confirm because not everyone thinks the same! Dc (19) seems to agree, but not until we're at about Wednesday!
