Okay, so my FYP on TikTok is full of clips of old episodes of Wife Swap. I remember it being on when I was quite young, but honestly it strikes me as a completely different world, does anyone know what I mean?

ALSO did any MNers appear on Wofe Swap? I've become obsessed and I really want to know how realistic is is, or if it was just edited?

Help a bored, currently solo-parenting, mum out! 😂

I loved wife swap! You should see the American version!!! (There's always said at the beginning that it was "dramatised for entertainment purposes" 🤨)

Clientele · 07/10/2024 01:50

I loved wife swap! Even though there were so many awful and crazy people and things on that show, the one thing I remember is the family where the husband would leave and enter the house by climbing through the living room window despite there being a perfectly good working door that everyone else used.

Oh wow I never saw that one! Will be finding that one later!!

KStockHERO · 07/10/2024 16:44

I fucking love Wife Swap.

The US ones were wild. I always remember the family who fed their children raw meat. High meat they used to call it.

AHFBridport · 07/10/2024 16:45

A favourite catchphrase in our house is still 'You're like Hitler - and Hitler died' from the very first episode.

ThatsNotMyTeen · 07/10/2024 16:46

Lizzy Bardsley with 8 kids who lived in Uncouth Road is the one I always remember

AHFBridport · 07/10/2024 16:47

I watched that one from my hospital bed the day dd1 was born @ThatsNotMyTeen - 21 years ago this very day!

I can’t remember the family’s name but it was definitely the uk one. The dad was maybe a builder or similar because he wore a hi viz vest and ‘work boots’ I think he was the step dad of the kids rather than dad, I’m sure he smoked and drank ‘cans’ which the swap mum wasn’t happy about, and I also think he was white and his partner was black and I’m nearly positive that she experienced some racism from the man in the other family who were all white but to be honest I could be wrong because it happened so often I might just be assuming it happened on that episode.

TandyhatesAmanda · 07/10/2024 16:50

Tony Butler one is on YouTube. I often winder what happened to that excuse of a man. I am getting the rage just thinking about him!

TandyhatesAmanda · 07/10/2024 16:52

I have all of them, I bought them on iTunes about 200 years ago and converted them.

Psychoticbreak · 07/10/2024 16:55

The mindful wife one has never left my brain!

Nameftgigb · 07/10/2024 16:59

I guess it made for good entertainment, but a lot of the episodes made me depressed. Obviously they tried to throw together total opposites for maximum impact, but that meant using people who were absolutely mental, often with severe parenting styles and/or abusive tendencies towards their partners. I vaguely remember one where one of the families were farmers. They had two children who weren’t allowed to have any friends. When they were asked who their best friends were, one said a stick which they carried around with them everywhere. The other said an orphaned sheep they were given to raise, it followed them around the farm all day. They were absolutely fucking distraught about it because the parents were planning on slaughtering it when it was big enough. Some absolutely batshit people on that program

‘Obviously they tried to throw together total opposites for maximum impact’

That must be where the married at first sight ‘experts’ learnt it from 😂

Didn't one of the Husbands get done for sexual harassment against the swap wife? Or maybe it was his friend actually?

I loved all those bonkers swap type programmes. Holiday Showdown was another.

murasaki · 08/10/2024 12:57

The celeb one with Edwina Currie and John McCrirrick was epic. They were awful, and their put upon spouses had a lovely calm week together being treated well by each other..

KStockHERO · 08/10/2024 14:08

@murasaki I loved that one. Poor Booby.

I've just been searching for that one! I couldn't remember who he was matched with but I do remember the partners had such a lovely time.

There was another one in that series, the celebrity series, where I think there was a female comedian who was gay and she had to live with a guy, can't remember who, and his wife and the comedian's wife had a lovely time as well with no drama.

Holiday Showdown 😅 Always working class v middle class holidays. I remember the episode where one family were Mormons and the other family went bonkers because the wife spent the entire spending-money budget (for everyone) on a crazily expensive 'prayer gown'.

Another one where the working class holiday was a trip on the canals in the Midlands and the family whose choice it was got really excited when they went under the M5, while the other family were bored witless. I was in the M5 camp.

Thanks! I’ll watch it when I’ve caught up on married at first sight!

Clientele · 09/10/2024 00:13

I’m only about 5 minutes into it and I’m 😮 If my husband told me I wasn’t being mindful and demure because I ‘argued’ with him I don’t think we’d still be married!
