Emily Maitlis endless triumph

Am I the only one who finds the lionisation of Emily Maitlis and her scoop of the century exposing Prince Andrew distasteful? Doubtless he is a deluded idiot but do we have to keep hearing about her triumph at his expense? Has she never done anything else?

She's done a lot of great stuff- my favourite news night presenter of all time. However, all journalists have an interview that eventually defines them. Personally I think she did a great job of letting him hang himself

Whats the Netflix Gillian Anderson programme?.

goingdownfighting · 25/08/2024 14:40

I think the story behind it is quite interesting actually, and not about Emily but the women who pulled it off.

I get what you mean about it being over sensationalised but there's a story about why there were 2 docufilms about it - I think Maitlis had been involved with one with Amazon Prime but Netflix got one out before that one.

Ultimately they shed light and brought down Prince Andrew essentially.

The bigger story is one of an all-female team exposing male abuse of power at the highest level - the royal family, Hollywood stars, etc. I’m surprised there was a need for three immediate films about it, but rather the over-telling of women’s stories than not telling them at all as is often the case.

Strange post - Emily Maitlis is undoubtedly amazing for many reasons, but the interview is very famous for Andrew very infamously not having any understanding at all of the gravity of what was being discussed. It shortly later led to him being ditched from the RF.

“The interview was described as a "car crash", "nuclear explosion level bad" and the worst public relations crisis for the royal family since the death of Diana, Princess of Wales” - From Wikipedia.

I remember an extremely powerful interview with Theresa May on Grenfell and read about her experience as a local resident which made me like her even more. https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/current-affairs/grenfell-newsnight-emily-maitlis-tragedy/

Her interview with Anthony Scaramucci gave insight around the Trump administration in the early days.

She is an excellent journalist, really insightful and intelligent. Respected by her peers and people say she’s a nice person too.

Newsnight reporter Emily Maitlis didn’t want to report on the Grenfell fire – she dashed to the scene to help instead

I don't think any of the Royals are particularly bright, a couple centuries of gene selection for ease and not graft, twined with a restricted gene pool has perhaps resulted in a staid IQ - maybe. Or ironically, maybe their upbringing actually doesn't permit for much intellectual growth.

So I honestly think PA would have hanged himself even if it was Gordon the Gopher who was interviewing him. It was his self-importance and hugely misplaced confidence and unacquaintance with the normal doings of real life, and not Emily Maitlis' questions which stumbled him.

Anyone else who had ever been vulnerable to the touch of misfortune in life, would have known when to at least pretend to say the right things. I agree Maitlis' gets far too much credit for the interview. Pompous PA was not an astute evader of truth, like many politicians for e.g. are.

Let us see her get David Cameron to admit he was misusing his influence and private contacts in the Greensill saga. I doubt she'd wring even a half confession.

Emily Maitlis is amazing and a fellow whippet wrangler. I love the News Agents and listen every day.

hasn’t the moment passed for navel gazing about this?
i take it you just watched the netflix gillian anderson programme?!

No haven't watched that. Not disputing her ability but not sure I'd want to be defined by such an easy target. But hey, that's journalism I suppose.

I don’t think she is defined by it. She’s had a great career. As for him being an ‘easy target’ well, was he really? He didn’t have to give that interview, was advised not to in fact. The fact that he did shows his arrogance and self importance. None of which is EM’s fault. They made a Netflix film about it. Not EM’s fault either.
