Oven door fell off before Christmas.

And as we were away over Christmas it didn't really matter then, but we need to do something about it as (a) it looks silly without the outer white part and (b) we've sold our house to an annoying investment buyer who if he discovers our oven door is not a fully functioning object will probably threaten to not pay us all we should be paid (we have already had a letter saying that unless we clean our carpets and they inspect them to their satisfaction that they will withold £1,000).

We have discovered that gas ovens are not cheap to buy - DH investigated on Monday and there are lots of electric ones at cheap prices but one gas one at a not cheap price.

DH and I are not practical in any way. And DH says he's going to try and screw the door back on. I forsee troubles ahead....

We don't have to have gas but as it is gas at the moment I presume that disconnecting the gas might be awkward (as I said, DH and I have no practical skills). Plus not convinced that buyer of our house wouldn't complain that there wasn't a gas oven there anymore (although more convinced they would be more annoyed with the lack of any working oven!)

from my limited experience i think that you could get a plumber out to put a cap on the gas pipe there- i honestly think it's just a matter of moving a lever- but you'd better check just in case.

regarding electric cookers- you need the cooker point there which is a higher voltage than an ordinary cooker- should imagine there is one there already.

Personally if I moved into a house with gas appliances the FIRST thing I would do would be to get a corgi registered plumber to check all pipework and appliances- your new buyers should really do the same

£1000 if the carpets aren't clean enough??? How much are they paying for them FFS?

Couldn't the oven door be reattached - by a specialist of course! The inner glass fell out of my oven door, it could not be glued back in (glue??? why was it glued in the first place? mad!) but the bloke who came managed to drill holes and screw it in.

Look in Yellow pages for appliance repair. Mine charged £40 just for turning up - the screws were free! - cheaper than a new oven though...

Appliance repair is a very good idea .

And we have suggested politely a compromise on the carpets (can't remember what but hopefully will satisfy all. It is true there is an ancient Lucozade stain in our room and a coffee stain in DS's room....)
