I've received the following e-mail today which I've just cut and pasted to this thread. I really can't believe what this country is coming to. Please support this worthy cause.

To all who know me and know that I served some 27 years in the Royal Air Force

I hope you will support this plea - to allow the Red Arrows to fly at the 2012 London Olympics

Many Thanks Gordon Fowler (The magazine "The Business")

Please forward this to as many people as possible!!! (British Citizens)
The world-famous Red Arrows have been banned from appearing at the 2012 London Olympics because they are deemed 'too British'.
Organisers of the event say that the Arrows military background might be 'offensive' to other countries taking part in the Games. The display team have performed at more than 4000 events worldwide, but the Department of Culture, Media and Sport have deemed the display team 'too militaristically British.' Red Arrows pilots were said to be 'outraged', as they had hoped to put on a truly world class display for the Games, something which had never been seen before. Being axed from a British-based event for being 'too British' is an insult - the Arrows are a symbol of Britain .

The Red Arrows have been excellent ambassadors for British overseas trade, as they display their British-built Hawk aircraft all over the world.
The Arrows performed a short flypast in 2005 when the winning bid was announced, but their flypast at the Games was to have been truly spectacular.
It is to be hoped that common sense prevails.
If you disagree with this decision, sign the petition on the link petitions.pm.gov.uk/RedArrows2012/?ref=redArrows2012
Forward this on to everyone you can.

was this not a hoax ?

Nagapie · 15/04/2008 18:06

What is the 'hoax or not' website??

Incidentally, according to a straw poll on e-petitions - this had over 100,000 signatures compared to the measly 148 for Nestle!!

libralady · 15/04/2008 18:14

There's current over 325,000 signatures on it. I haven't heard it's a hoax. My e-mail came from a reputable source.

Too terrible to believe because it's not true.

See www.hoax-slayer.com/red-arrows-petition.shtml.

Alternatively, hope that this statement from the Red Arrows themselves describing the story as "complete rubbish" is from a sufficiently "reputable" source for you...

LOL!

I received this e mail and dismissed it instantly a a hoax - and in any case if it was real I would certainly be signing a petition declaring that a display of military planes - no matter how skilful and thrilling - is comepletely against the Olympic Ideal!

And I would protest oin ecological grounds.

All power to members of our armed forces in thier defence role, etc etc, but there is a time and a place.

MaryAnnSingleton · 15/04/2008 18:26

I love the Red Arrows

Blu · 15/04/2008 18:27

Yes, i went oooo aaaaah at a display at a big do at the Boradstairs carnival a few years ago - but that dpesn't mean it's the right thing for the Olympics.
