Do your mums start cleaning your house when they come to visit?

She cant help herself. Every time she pops over she is in the fridge, chucking out the 'out of date' food and wiping clean all the jars.

Then she gets going on the highchair with a scourer!

I caught her the other day doing all the light switches with kitchen roll and cif - i'd only popped to the loo for a minute!

I dont know whether to be offended or grateful

my mum is the same. last time she was here she cleaned behind the fridge and took all the bits I had been saving for ds's crafty stuff to the recycling.

MaryAnnSingleton · 12/04/2008 18:39

no !

Spidermama · 12/04/2008 18:40

I wish mine did.

MIL used to do a bit. She'd also cook. Not now. No-one does anything now but complain about how they always catch bugs from my kids when they come.

CrackerOfNuts · 12/04/2008 18:41

If my mum has the kids here whilst I am out then she always cleans and does some washing.

If she comes around when I am in then she might wash up whilst I make lunch or something.

I am really grateful tbh as I couldn't cope lately without her.

MuffinMclay · 12/04/2008 19:21

No, just tells me that it is in a dreadful state. She is an obsessive cleaner in her own house, but won't do anything at all when she comes to us because she is 'on holiday'. Won't even make a cup of tea for herself.

chipmonkey · 12/04/2008 20:07

My Mum doesn't clean but she decides to do all my laundry. And mixes colours with whites so all my whites end up a murky grey colour! She did it with ds1's Communion Suit trousers so the trousers ended up a different colour from the jacket and we still hadn't had the professional photos taken! And when she puts things on the airer she puts layers of clothes one on top of the other so none of them has a chance of drying.
And she leaves tea bags in my sink!!!!!

Good to get that off my chest!

Milliways · 12/04/2008 20:08

Not if I am in, but she housesits when we go camping, and even though I tidy, she descales the kettle, cleans the windows, inside cupboards & does any ironing she can find.

I love her

jingleyjen · 12/04/2008 20:10

no but she does the ironing if there is any to do... it drives me MAD.. she is crap at ironing .. I iron everything, I iron it really well... I am an ungrateful daughter... I would much prefer it if she cleaned light switches or cleaned the high chair..

chubbleigh · 12/04/2008 20:13

My Mum is like 'clean your own damn house, I've come to see my grandson', fair enough. When you go to her house you don't have to lift a finger and all your washing is done for you before you leave.

My ex-mil, she was pathological about it, I once found her on her hands and knees scrubbing the patio in her pyjamas at seven in the morning.

DP's mum cleans things if we go out and she babysits, but she doesn't otherwise.
I'd like to think it's because there is no cleaning to be done

ratbunny · 12/04/2008 20:23

why would it annoy you?
mum does it too, but only when ds is asleep. I am so grateful to her it is untrue. She enjoys doing it and feels she is helping. I am sure when ds is older I will do the same to his place!
We came back from holiday once and mum had had the house keys. There was fresh milk and bread, she had defreosted the freezer and cleaned the oven and fridge. As well as all of the hooevring etc. My mum is fab!

evenhope · 12/04/2008 20:29

Yes mine does it, and it drives me mad! It's not that she thinks she's helping, which would be OK, it's because she things the house isn't clean enough.

My grandma made everyone late for school/ work when she stayed with us once because she was cleaning the (one) bathroom. What was really annoying was we'd spent hours cleaning everywhere before she arrived.

Nbg · 12/04/2008 20:40

Oooh my mum does and I love it.
She does everything from going to get a load of washing in to cleaning and sterilising the bottles.

My nan does my ironing too.
Tis marvellous

miffymum · 12/04/2008 20:42

I wish I could get my Mum round here more often - she cleans stuff that I didn't realise was dirty. It's great.

dizzydixies · 12/04/2008 20:43

mine would have to visit to do that soooooooo fat chance of that ever happening

barnstaple · 12/04/2008 20:43

My MIL only points out what's wrong but wouldn't dream of helping. She's 150 miles away now so she can't do it 3 times a week like she used to

Ceolas · 12/04/2008 20:45

never!

Don't think I'd like her to really.

itsMYmummy · 12/04/2008 20:56

No she does'nt lift a finger, in fact she expects room service!! and when we visit her we are given chores to do. I kid you not.

MIL tries, but shes never been alone in my house before so she never really gets a chance.
