Have you ever seen "save a tree..." on a laundry label before???

I have just put an American branded ski jacket in the washing machine. The label is in English one side, French the other. On both sides it says, in the appropriate language

machine wash cool
do not bleach
& 2 more instructions I've already forgotten

[should not be allowed to run complicated domestic appliances emoticon]

but then on the French side - in English - it says:

save a tree
eat a beaver

(is this an elaborate tease on French Canadians? Are they assumed not to understand English? Or is it a double bluff tease on Americans who think that?)

I am amused but baffled
