M&S Receipt Problem, help!!!

Rhiannon · 10/12/2002 22:38

On 29th Nove I went to M&S Lakeside and came out with my food shopping. Having checked the receipt some time later I find I've paid £19.99 for a gammon joint that I didn't buy.

It wasn't at the beginning or end of the shopping but in the middle so something has obviously not scanned properly.

I've been told to phone the store and explain with the receipt nos. Does anyone know if this is a common problem? Also am I likely to encounter problems getting my money back?

Thanks R

Rhiannon, no experience but I would think M&S would know if something had either been incorrectly barcoded - i.e it had the wrong barcode sticker on the product - or if the barcodes were input incorrectly on their system, i.e a loaf of bread was scanning as a gammon joint since you won't have been the only one with the problem. Their stock will have been affected instore too if so...call them, M&S are usually quite helpful ime. Good luck.

Rhiannon, I agree with www, something has been given the wrong barcode and there should be lots of people with the same problem.

I can see that 19.99 might make them blink a bit but on the other hand that would be a hell of a big gammon joint! When I worked at Sainsbos the system was always throwing up anomalies like this (well, maybe not always but often enough) and M & S are even more righteous than them so shouldn't be a prob.

I think they will refund you no problem. A friend once bought some wine (a few botles) and took it back - can't remember why, and they gave her her money back, and then told her to keep it anyway !

Very bizarre!

M&S are usually very good about this sort of thing so I wouldn't panic.

I worked at safeway for 4 years and I had a £120 donut come though on my till!!!! It is a common problem and it is likely that the cashier typed in the wrong code, just to make sure, did you buy anything for £19.99????? If you did and it hasn't shown up on the bill it, maybe that the cashier just put it under a gammon joint.

the tills in our canteen at work are a bit dubious too..I once bought lunch (something like a baked potato, with filling & salad) and up flashed the word SAUSAGE on the till

Rhiannon go in and complain like mad,and ask for the supervisor first.I was once charged ten pounds for two gingerbreads, good job I check my receipts. If I had a penny for all the times I'd been overcgarged in supermarkets I'd be rich by now.Just the other day the I bought a bogof only to get outside and see that I had actually paid for two.You can sue them for not getting their tills right,it's an offence.

I spent £50 in Sainsbury's once and it never left my bank

To update you I phoned today and spoke to someone who reassured me that she would give me a refund in the New Year when I next go in the store and she's made a note in her book. She said she'd check the records to see if they still have the CCTV (doubt they will though).

No didn't buy anything for £19.99 and the clothes don't have 99p on them anymore.

WelI I'd better go, off to Barbados in morning. R

Just had to laugh at the thought of the £120 donut !

My DH has a drawer full of receipts that have never appeared on our credit card statements, )as he checks them each month as most of the stuff goes through the business , not to check my spending!!)

It's amazing how much some of the receipts are for as well!
