I just wanted some advice. I have a recently turned 2yr old boy. I have not had any concerns but know he is delayed with speech and communication. He does say some words and feel he has come on this year. He is great with animal sounds, action words, letters, books, colours and much more.
We have noticed since Christmas that he doesn’t answer to his name. He has had his hearing checked and everything came back fine. A ref for speech and language have been put in and we are looking to go private. My gut feeling tells me that he will talk but might take longer. Its hard because when you goggle about not answering to name it says possible autism.
I feel a little lost and don’t know what to think because we had a meeting with nursery and she said about him not answering to his name and a couple of other red flags. She said about him laying on the floor and playing on his side. I never see him do this at home and if he does he will move and sit up. I felt because she’s a senco lead she was saying some stuff that I hadn’t seen or disagreed with. He’s at nursery 3 days and spends the rest of his other days with me. We do lots of classes and different experiences. She was indicating possible autism because of the delayed speech and not answering to name.
I spoke to the HV and she wasn’t happy that the nursery discussed this without being qualified. She did his 2 year assessment and said the areas where he didn’t score so high was communication and social. When we were there we noticed my son touching his ears occasionally and I have noticed this myself. It’s almost like hand flapping but not and has probably started since April. I have discussed with a friend and she said I thought this was normal development but the HV said its not.
She said that she felt there was something and might be social and behavioural. My husband and I have been worried as we want to make sure we can get him the help he needs and know wait lists are long.
I just wondered if anyone else has been in a similar situation and could give some advice. I have done lots of research and reading. We don’t have anyone else with autism in the family so this is all new to us if this is the case. The HV said he’s too young for an autism ref as this can be done at a later stage. She is going to see him again in 3 months. My gut feeling says I’m not sure if autism but then think what else can it be?
