How long do you keep papers etc

Im having a big clearout of paperwork but not sure what to keep?

How long is best to keep bank statements, bills etc?

eek! I dont think Ive lived out of my Mums for that long so I have to keep them all then!! lol

I dont think i need them for tax just general household stuff

I only keep everything for 12 months and then cross shred everything, in fact it needs doing now, so thats another thing to add to my New Years to do list.

A year for everything like statements, paid bills etc. We keep wage slips until the april after the tax year they were issued - but so far we've kept all our P60s.

I keep mine a year at least as I had bad experience with Council tax, at the end of the year, they said I had missed a payment early on in the year, I knew I hadn't and luckily I had all my statements for the year so could easily prove them wrong.
