Has anyone else gone through the nightmare of buying a new mattress?

We bought a new and expensive Tempur mattress a few months ago but I have found I literally can't sleep on it. It makes my back bad, is difficult to turn over on and feels like there is long mound going along the middle. It also feels a bit like lying on marshmallows. Sadly, we bought it from a retailer that didn't offer any kind of sleep trial period (didn't realise this) and not from Tempur directly. Thus it has to go and will probably end up on the spare bed. However DH has said I must look for the next mattress as he can 'sleep on anything' and I'm finding it an absolute nightmare. I had more or less settled on trying out an Emma mattress until I read that they sag in the middle after about two years. The same goes for the Simba. I found a plush Relyon coil spring mattress with a naturally filled pillow type topping but the reviews said the same about sagging. Emma and Eze score highly on 'Which' but everything is so contradictory I feel really stuck about what to do. Any advice out there?

I've had my mattress since 2002. Sounds grim but it's really comfortable so reluctant to replace. It's an m&s organic wool many springed type thing that cost about £800 back in 2002. I've certainly had my monies worth.

We did this a few years ago, we bought a memory foam topped mattress . It was so lovely and soft and comfortable but within a very short time, it was too hot, difficult to turn over on and was giving me such a bad back. I ended up giving it to a family member after about 8 months . We then bought a sprung mattress which has been so much better and we're able to turn and rotate it which we couldn't with the memory foam one.

When did the "mattresses only having one sleeping side" madness begin ?

Buyer beware.

It never struck me and I wasn't told that there was only one sleeping side to the mattress we bought.
It's not like you turn a mattress upside down in the shop when testing so how could we know.

Our previous mattress - 6ft zip and link - lasted so long because I was so careful to flip and rotate the ends when changing the sheets. It was a palaver but worth it.

Do John Ryan, Vi Spring, Hypnos, Emma, Premier Inn, Ikea etc mattresses only have one sleeping side ?

Spend a night at a Premier Inn if you like the mattress you can buy one. My partner stays in them a lot for work and raved about them so we ended up buying one. I hadn't tried it myself before purchase but I am happy with it.

Agree to this, we bought the Premier Inn Hypnos mattress a few years ago and it's excellent . We also knew it was a dead cert as DH stays in Premier inns frequently. It's a Silentnight model now but they presumably specify them to wear well and be comfortable for majority of people.

Which one?

It's a Hypnos Caress regular tension, from the Serene Collection. Pocket sprung with lambswool.
It may not be the same now as ours is a few years old.

Ilovemyshed · 21/06/2024 15:15

Avoid anything with a topper. You want a dense, very highly sprung (3000 +) mattress that you turn every week at first and then monthly and then as often as you can bear.

Try The Wool Room - they have real shops. They are £££ but very worth it and do have a good sale and seconds.

Sorry but the "nightmare" of buying a new mattress? This is such a first world problem 🤣 just go to dreams or bensons or somewhere like that and lie on a load until you find one you like.

Yes, but its still alot of money and therefore a big purchase.

SheilaFentiman · 21/06/2024 15:21

Another vote for Hypnos. Lots of hotels use them

SheilaFentiman · 21/06/2024 15:22

@deeahgwitch definoty not our Hypnos, corners are labelled to l
flip or turn every quarter 😀

There are sellers who offer 100 night free trial, so would try one of those. We recently got one via amazon, and I think 100 nights is more than long enough to see if it's suitable. If not they arrange a free collection.

But what happens to the used sample mattresses ? I wouldn’t want to buy a mattress some one else had slept on for 99 days ( let alone other activities).

We bought ours from the Premier Inn website after having an amazing few nights sleep on one.

Your Premier Inn Mattress - Premier Inn Bed

So did I but I've been exceptionally disappointed. Everytime I stay in a Premier Inn (a few nights a month) I'm reminded of how my own 'Premier Inn' mattress is nothing like the ones in the hotel rooms.

DancingFerret · 21/06/2024 15:38

We bought a Vispring just before Christmas; in all honesty it's the most comfortable mattress I've ever slept on - anywhere. Worth every penny.

It IS a nightmare though! I spent £900 on an Emma as it was rated as the best blah blah and two years later it's bloody awful- lumpy, saggy and has a huge dip in the middle. Really uncomfortable and I resent having spent that much. We are also fairly light people so it shouldn't have done that either

allaboardtheplaybus · 21/06/2024 16:00

We've had our simba about five years and I love it. Admittedly it felt weird for the first few nights but I think any new mattress would.

Hellodarknessmyfriend · 21/06/2024 16:00

I think it's quite personal, too. I love our Emma hybrid!

smellsfishy · 21/06/2024 16:06

Just got one from loaf & it's so comfortable - pretty good value as mattresses go. I can't say about its longevity as only had it a short while - but it's really nice to sleep on!

The people talking about Vi Spring- just googled it and it looks amazing. Could anyone define what it is thats so great about it please? - are they firm/soft etc?

I like firm so wondering if they do different firmness levels

Renamed · 21/06/2024 19:07

Warren Evans. Just recently realised that they’re back! Have a pocket spring mattress from them over 12 years old, it’s fabulous

ashiningbeaconinspace · 21/06/2024 19:11

Different mattresses suit different people. You need to find out what works for you. Go to a mattress shop and try some out. Lie on them for at least 10 to 15 minutes as they will feel different as your body warms them up. To choose ours I took headphones and went and spent time lying on different types and firmness ratings for some time before making a decision.

JennyWren87 · 21/06/2024 19:11

We bought an Emma matress as a moving in treat. Worst. Matress. Ever. Now we got a 200 pound job from something like mattress4U and it's a dream. A spring memory hybrid

I can only speak from our own experience, but IMO, Vispring beds are amazing. They offer soft, medium, and firm tensions, and their mattresses are made to order. We have the Devonshire, kingsize, but made as two separate mattresses (a) to reduce awareness of the other person moving around, and (b) for ease of turning. Their mattresses are heavy! We have a sleigh bed, so the mattress rests on slats.

It's hard to define exactly what makes ours so comfortable; it has a medium tension which supports the body, but also seems to have some "give" so that you settle nicely on the mattress without being enveloped by it. Vispring do offer the facility to change your mattress if you find it uncomfortable at a cost of £100. (The retailer we used threw this in as part of our deal, but we have never felt the need to use it - very happy with our mattress(es).)

the2andahalfmillion · 21/06/2024 23:20

I think Vispring is just really, really high quality manufacture and components.

And they last. Really last.

Mine has been good as new for nearly 2 decades. I am probably disgusting but don't buy the marketing shizzle about mattresses needing changed every 4 years for 'hygiene' reasons. I've never heard of anyone getting terribly ill from a slightly aged mattress.

But yes, they are an absolute bastard to turn over.

greengreyblue · 21/06/2024 23:25

John Ryan handmade mattresses. The best!

greengreyblue · 21/06/2024 23:27

@deeahgwitch Our John Ryan mattress is double sided so can be turned.I think they say you can return if not satisfactory. Thinks it’s 90 days or something.
