Has anyone else gone through the nightmare of buying a new mattress?

We bought a new and expensive Tempur mattress a few months ago but I have found I literally can't sleep on it. It makes my back bad, is difficult to turn over on and feels like there is long mound going along the middle. It also feels a bit like lying on marshmallows. Sadly, we bought it from a retailer that didn't offer any kind of sleep trial period (didn't realise this) and not from Tempur directly. Thus it has to go and will probably end up on the spare bed. However DH has said I must look for the next mattress as he can 'sleep on anything' and I'm finding it an absolute nightmare. I had more or less settled on trying out an Emma mattress until I read that they sag in the middle after about two years. The same goes for the Simba. I found a plush Relyon coil spring mattress with a naturally filled pillow type topping but the reviews said the same about sagging. Emma and Eze score highly on 'Which' but everything is so contradictory I feel really stuck about what to do. Any advice out there?

We have an Emma Hybrid and I absolutely love it! Needed to be firm as my husband has cauda equina. We went king-size too as 4 yo still besdshares a lot! Tbh superking may have been better 😆

My husband had a lot of back problems we went to John Lewis and a real mattress obsessive man advised us. We had to lie on the beds etc and ended up buying a ridiculously expensive Visping mattress and bed . We've had it about 6 years now and it was the best money we ever spent. Husbands back is completely better.
They come with a really long guarantee as well. Good luck hope you find something that suits you

Have to say I agree with this. Visprung are second to none. Such high quality. I have one I bought 16 years ago and it is still amazing. But, it is an absolute ball ache to turn or move, it weighs about the same as three dead men.

Garlicker · 20/06/2024 23:19

I'm also a fan of pocket-sprung and Ikea mattresses.

I'm poor, so can't afford any of the recommendations above! What I'm sleeping on is a pocket-sprung mattress from a Groupon offer 😂 which has a ridiculous pillow top thing stitched on. The mattress itself is firm, but the pillow nonsense creates an uneven surface that hurt my back. So I've added FOUR different kinds of toppers, one of which is a bounceback duvet folded underneath the area where I sleep 😂

Success! So, for fellow cheapskates, I'm recommending a budget pocket-sprung mattress, as deep and as many springs as you can afford. Go for firm so it'll last longer. Then spend another £100 or so on additions until you're happy!

I have a Panda topper.
It’s very good.

Ooh, they look good, @EvangelistaSister! Bookmarked for when my Groupon bargain starts to sag ...

I feel for you OP, I had the same experience. Spent ££££ on a ViSpring mattress and divan which felt like a cloud in the shop. When it actually came to sleeping on it, I realised too late it had zero support and it remains the only bed I've ever slept in that actually made my back ache. We persisted for a few weeks before it got relegated to the spare room and eventually I sold it on ebay for more than I'd expected (but still way less than we'd paid for it).

Currently sleeping on an IKEA Hovig mattress with a memory foam topper which is blissful. I'm never, ever being suckered in to buying an expensive mattress again.

Sorry but the "nightmare" of buying a new mattress? This is such a first world problem 🤣 just go to dreams or bensons or somewhere like that and lie on a load until you find one you like.

It really can be a nightmare when you spend your hard earned cash on a mattress which then turns out to be unusable and gives you mega backache so you can hardly move the next day.
Having tried the foam type ones and toppers of all kinds we don’t know what to do about the next mattress, but need one asap as I have to sleep on the sofa ( really comfy but I can’t go on doing this.)
Will look at some suggestions on here including Premier Inn and also Silent Night. We were talked into our present mattress at a bed shop about 5 years ago, too high, too hard and too expensive.Impossible to turn it as it weighs a ton, can’t wait to get rid of it.Trying beds in the shop doesn’t really help.

I bought one a few months ago, big mistake as the single cost £100 it’s too hot though it claims not to be, and you can’t move on it.Result, backache all the next day.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 20/06/2024 23:31

Last time I bought a bed, the choice was not just brand of mattress, and type (eg pocket springs), but also firmness level.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 20/06/2024 23:36

thenightsky · 20/06/2024 22:44

I can't right now as DH has gone to bed and I would have to strip the fitted bottom sheet off from under him Grin

I also have a Hypnos mattress after staying at a Premier Inn for a month (don't ask) I love it, and it's still in perfect condition after 6 years.

For anyone interested, if you go to the Premier Inn website, there's a link saying 'buy our beds' or some such.

sparkleowl · 20/06/2024 23:39

Having just looked up the Premier Inn mattresses, customers say the new suppliers are making beds nothing like those in the Innns.
Back to Silent night methinks.

PickAChew · 20/06/2024 23:43

Our vispring mattress was lovely for a couple of years and then just wasn't. So disappointed.

RogueFemale · 20/06/2024 23:43

Another vote for Hypnos. They really are the best mattress at whatever level. This supplier often has ex-display ones, very discounted, nationwide delivery. https://www.crendonbedsandfurniture.co.uk/our-showroom/

Harrison Spinks made in UK has lots natural fibres. Expensive but would rather stay at home in bed enjoying it than go on holiday. Soft surface, firm and supportive below when you sink in to it. Life changing. We sent a Tempur mattress back it was weird - too hard but not firm at the same time, like a soggy brick, certainly did nothing useful for back pain

pandasorous · 20/06/2024 23:47

I reccommend the hypnos ortho gold. I have back issues, and I absolutely love this mattress. have been sleeping on one for over a year.

Rebusmyfire · 20/06/2024 23:51

We recently bought a pocket springs mattress from Harrison Spinks.
Took a month to "break in" now it is comfy sleep worthy.

Was thinking of a memory foam but my preference is to be cool at night and a sales team member whispered we'd be returning it in a fortnight.

Which particular mattress please?

stayathomer · 20/06/2024 23:54

I feel for you op, we tried out at the shop and it’s so not the same thing. We’ve had ours a few months now and I still miss the old one- I wake up a little sore every morning. Plus this one is squeaky🙈😅

EvangelistaSister · 20/06/2024 23:59

Yes I think it depends on the base it’s used on. It might feel okay in the shop with the bed it’s on there, but quite different when you use it on your own bed.

GodspeedJune · 21/06/2024 00:15

I’ve got a vispring. It’s extremely comfortable. Going by their recommendation I needed a soft but that wasn’t supportive enough so was swapped for a medium under their guarantee. It’s pocket sprung surrounded by all natural materials like wool and horse hair I believe! It’s spoilt me as I’d always rather be in my own bed than a hotel or holiday cottage.

The only downside is that it’s very heavy so with hindsight a zip and link might have been easier to turn.

You don’t want a pillow top as you’ll get half the life out of the mattress. Have one that can be flipped over to even out the wear.

DBD1975 · 21/06/2024 00:34

Spend a night at a Premier Inn if you like the mattress you can buy one. My partner stays in them a lot for work and raved about them so we ended up buying one. I hadn't tried it myself before purchase but I am happy with it.

deeahgwitch · 21/06/2024 00:34

I too agonised over a mattress @EvangelistaSister.
I didn't realise that the one I bought has only one usable side. It can't be flipped over just rotated. ☹️
I'm so disappointed. We'll get half the length of time out of it we got from our old mattress.
Gutted!
And it sags.
It was over a €1000 euro too.

I know this was meant partly tongue in cheek. But getting a bad or good night's sleep is hugely important to your mental well being. I've had arthritis since a child and the right mattress means I don't spend the day with painful joints.

I'd never buy a mattress without lying on it (I went to the Hypnos showroom) but it's hard to gauge how well it holds its shape after a year or two. My Hypnos ortho mattress (with topper) is still fantastic after three years so I can vouch for it on that front. It's great if people have found cheaper mattresses they like but I'd say it's worth spending the extra money on a really good mattress (if you have it).
