Has anyone else gone through the nightmare of buying a new mattress?

We bought a new and expensive Tempur mattress a few months ago but I have found I literally can't sleep on it. It makes my back bad, is difficult to turn over on and feels like there is long mound going along the middle. It also feels a bit like lying on marshmallows. Sadly, we bought it from a retailer that didn't offer any kind of sleep trial period (didn't realise this) and not from Tempur directly. Thus it has to go and will probably end up on the spare bed. However DH has said I must look for the next mattress as he can 'sleep on anything' and I'm finding it an absolute nightmare. I had more or less settled on trying out an Emma mattress until I read that they sag in the middle after about two years. The same goes for the Simba. I found a plush Relyon coil spring mattress with a naturally filled pillow type topping but the reviews said the same about sagging. Emma and Eze score highly on 'Which' but everything is so contradictory I feel really stuck about what to do. Any advice out there?

My husband had a lot of back problems we went to John Lewis and a real mattress obsessive man advised us. We had to lie on the beds etc and ended up buying a ridiculously expensive Visping mattress and bed . We've had it about 6 years now and it was the best money we ever spent. Husbands back is completely better.
They come with a really long guarantee as well. Good luck hope you find something that suits you

We have a vispring! It’s amazing!!!

Buy one from John Ryan website or visit them if you're nearby
Absolutely amazing mattresses.

I came on here to recommend John Ryan. Fantastic mattresses.

My DD bought an Emma mattress 3 years ago- it has totally sagged and is now uncomfortable and not useable. They are about to call in the warranty and get their money back. I know several other people who have said the same- the memory foam just does not last! .

We have been married for 35 years and have had 3 Silent Night pocket sprung mattresses. The most recent one is 9 years old and still as comfortable as the day we bought it. Wouldn't buy any other brand. ( and - No I don't work for Silent Night!)

Go to a premier inn, if you like the feel of their beds you can buy them. I sleep at premier inns all over the place and always find the bed comfy. So now that my kids reliably don’t wee in the bed I intend to buy one!

Moier · 20/06/2024 19:53

Go to your local JYSK

Try them out.
Half price sale on.
Best mattress I've ever bought.
Gold memory foam with cooling gel. Was half price.. from £800 to £400.
I'm severely disabled.. it's perfect for me. My sister got one and two of my friends after my recommendation. @

Have you gone on holiday or stayed anywhere that the bed was heavenly? If so, look and see if you can find what type of bed it is

That's how I ended up ordering a mattress via the Premier Inn website. When it came it had a Hypnos label on it.

Would you mind saying exactly what it says? There seem to be more than one type .

We love the one we got from here. DHs side is firm, my side medium firm . Also it has a warm side for winter and a cool side for summer so gets turned roughly every 6 months.

Can you try them out and return if they aren’t right?

We've had a hypnos for years. V expensive at the time but worth every penny. Hasn't sagged at all and very very comfortable.

Which one?

We have one of these, but from John Lewis. It's amazing.

We bought ours from the Premier Inn website after having an amazing few nights sleep on one.

Your Premier Inn Mattress - Premier Inn Bed

Have you had it long? I was going to buy one until my dad told me he had to get rid of his as it was awful. I don't think he managed more than a couple of years with it.

My current mattress was from an independent mattress shop that my dad recommended and I hate it. It's memory foam topped on one side and pocket sprung on the other. The memory foam is too warm and gives me hip/back pain but the sprung side is too uncomfortable 😑

Lucyloo223 · 20/06/2024 20:11

Sorry but the "nightmare" of buying a new mattress? This is such a first world problem 🤣 just go to dreams or bensons or somewhere like that and lie on a load until you find one you like.

SausageinaBun · 20/06/2024 20:13

I went to John Lewis and used some sort of goldilocks approach. I tried the mattresses from cheap to expensive and bought the cheapest one that I couldn't tell the difference from that and the next one up.

I did that. I agonised and agonised then bought one I thought was great. Constant back problems ever since and hate it .

They now buy Silent Night mattresses

Soluckyinlove · 20/06/2024 20:48

I had to buy a new mattress early this year as I was suffering with back pain and have had serious back problems in the past. I ended up going to a local independent shop. I knew I did not want any memory foam, a past mistake!
I tried them all out and in the end it came down to two at a very similar price (around £800). One was a well known brand, the other evidently a local Yorkshire company. I asked which he recommended of the two. I ordered the local one. I have been really, really happy from the day it arrived.

Has anyone else gone through the nightmare of buying a new mattress?

Then get one that has a guarantee where you can try it for 30 days or something. Loads of places do deals like that.

It did have a guarantee. I should have sent it back but I just hoped it would bed in so to speak. I have two toppers on it and it’s still too hard.

I can't right now as DH has gone to bed and I would have to strip the fitted bottom sheet off from under him Grin

confusedlots · 20/06/2024 22:48

I bought a relatively cheap mattress from bensons for beds for our spare bedroom years ago. Was rarely used but I ended up sleeping in there for a couple of weeks when our child wasn't well and I have never slept better! Such a comfortable mattress and so much better than the much more expensive one I have on our own bed!

I'd avoid any of the named mattresses, they're all pretty crap after a year or so. And so hot too.

I've now gone back to an ikea mattress. Can't really go wrong.
