I mean they must go through the same cycle...albeit on a different timescale.

But do they menstruate & bleed like we do and where does it go....

Well, dogs do. A bit. But it only seems to happen about once a year with them.

(Eww. Actually I think I'd rather not think about this right now...)

yes. I had a female dog who menstruated. My dad put a large nappy with a hole cut out for her tail on her. Not sure how heavy her period was, as I was only 5, and was more interested in the nappy than her cycle.

so what happens to the carpet???

Do you have to chuck them outside???

Hmmm, I googled this:

Do animals menstruate?
Only humans, apes and some monkeys menstruate. Other mammals like dogs and cats sometimes will bleed a little when they are in heat, which is when they ovulate and mate, but they do not have menstrual cycles. Having a menstrual cycle means you do not go into heat. Because of this, humans can mate whenever they want, and have babies at any time of the year.

I don't know where the unused eggs and uterus lining goes if they don't menstruate - they certainly don't ovulate as often as humans ...

If it's a cat - it is probably cystitis! My (male) cat got it!

CoteDAzur · 07/04/2008 21:58

I've seen dogs menstruate.

Just to hijack a little but sort of on the same subject.

Do animals always get pregnant when they mate? I know nothing about animals, was never allowed a pet more complicated than a goldfish... It always seems a dead cert with them but is that the case?

End of hijack

Well, I've seen dogs bleed and their masters put nappies on them but didn't ask if their uterine lining was coming out with the blood

MadamePlatypus · 08/04/2008 12:19

Don't think dogs bleed an awful lot. Nappies seems a bit OTT.

morningglory · 08/04/2008 20:55

Probably OTT, but we had white carpets, so nappies it was for the poor dog.
