Bite with red patch?

I was bitten day before yesterday.. I think.. and have started to get a red patch around it which seems to be getting bigger. I have taken an antihistamine. Could I be sensitive to bites? Or any idea why it may have gone like this?!

Bite with red patch?

It looks like an allergic reaction to the bite, although that's an odd place to get bitten. I'd get it checked out in case it is infected.

Horsefly. Absolute wanker insects 😡

Put some hydrocortisone cream on it if you've got some and don't scratch it. Don't be alarmed if it bruises.

Agree with PP, looks like a horsefly bite. They are absolute bastards. I’d keep an eye on it and any concerns see the GP.

I had one on my calf a few years ago and it was swollen for weeks.

CissOff · 04/06/2024 22:23

Draw a ring around it and track the swelling. This happened to me recently and it turned in to cellulitis which required IV antibiotics to treat.

If the area is hot, swollen, or you start to feel particularly unwell you should seek immediate medical advice. The Drs were frequently checking for signs of sepsis when I saw them.

I should say, I got bitten in an identical place. I’ll PM you some pics…

Ouch! That looks sore

I’ve had quite a few horsefly bites recently as we’ve been strimming; I get a bad reaction that brings them up into a horrible lump that itches like crazy. I take an anti-histamine and ibuprofen which takes the heat out of them, then smother them in sudocrem. They still take a while to go and one has turned into a big scar on my leg; it’s as though they chew on your flesh!

Thanks everyone. I appreciate your responses. Makes me feel more calm!!! Will definitely keep an eye on any changes. Thanks again!!

I had one like that on my leg, it also oozed stuff out of it, it lasted about a week and I had to be careful what I wore as it stuck a bit to it. Definitely keep an eye on it.

Worth asking a pharmacist to take a look

Seeline · 05/06/2024 09:17

My mosquito bites always react like that.
Keep up with antihistamines.

Beamur · 05/06/2024 09:21

My DH has a similar reaction to spider bites.
Take antihistamines and if the inflamed area doesn't shrink/gets bigger in a day or two I would contact your GP. It might need stronger meds and could be infected.
