Stairgate for spiral staircase - HELP!!

Hi there -

Has anyone fitted a stairgate to a spiral staircase? We have one with a steel spine and 1cm diameter (ie thin) steel spindles on the bannister side, so we can't screw into anything and we can't use a pressure mechanism because the spindles aren't wide enough.

Really hoping someone out there's been through this already - our little girl fell down our friend's very normal carpetted staircase yesterday and was fine, but I'm thinking she might not be so lucky if she tries climbing our wooden spiral one!

Thanks

Yes, we did, year ago. From memory, we attached it with these plastic ties that you pull to tighten and then have to cut off - sorry, can't remember what they're called.

Could you get a baby dan and put it around the stairs?

We have got the same problem! Ds just starting to climb ours. Ours does not have a steel spine though. DH is going to rig something up over the weekend, so I will get back to you!

Another possible option, depending on the layout of your house, is to put them across specific doorways or across a hall, if there is anywhere narrow enough. We couldn't block off the first 3 steps of our stairs as the rail didn't start till higher, and we put two stairgates across the doorways into the downstairs rooms instead.

Aha! You're all brilliant - thanks! Will be interested to see how you do TheApprentice - please do keep me posted.

Meanwhile think MrsMuddle's plastic tie thingies idea is genius - I can totally see that working with a rollerblind gate.

Can't really put gates on the doorways without relegating her to the kitchen, as our front room is open plan with the stairs in the corner, but the baby dan idea might also solve our other problem, which is that the spindles are so far apart that even if we sort out a gate at the bottom she's still going to be able to get in through the sides onto the first 2 or 3 steps once she sets her mind to it!

Thanks again
