His van blocks my view when reversing out of the drive very worried il be hit from the side with my 3 kids in the car as it’s so close I’ve asked him to move it closer to his gate and he won’t any ideas what I can do ???

Reversing in may seem like a faff when you get home, but it really is the safest way. Once you get into the habit, not reversing in will quickly seem so weird.

Either way, unless you have a massive sweeping drive that's big enough to drive all the way around in a big circle (or one of those fancy turntables), you have to either reverse IN (with nothing to have to watch out for behind you and all the time in the world to do it) or reverse OUT (having to watch for and find a quick gap between any amount of traffic potentially on the road and pedestrians/children walking/playing on the pavement).

SeanBeansMealDeal · 21/04/2024 12:14

Kindly, you can't really complain about your neighbour parking in a way that might make it less safe for you to get from your drive on to the road, when you yourself are also choosing the much less safe way of doing so.

kiwiane · 21/04/2024 12:17

The police may send a PCSO round to check safety as it sounds very close to your dropped kerb.
When I lived off a main road I had to take the harder option of reversing in as I could never safely reverse on to the street.

WallaceinAnderland · 21/04/2024 12:21

OP didn't say she was reversing out into traffic, just that she was worried someone wouldn't see them reversing out because of the vans proximity to her driveway.

It's the same thing 😂

What is she reversing into, if not traffic?

Can’t park across my drive as his van takes up part of my space

That suggests someone else is parking close the other side. If so , why focus on the van alone? Would council provide a Disabled marked bay for you? Do you have a Bluebadge?

Have to my drive way is small at the moment but getting it extended in a few months time

You don't have to - you can easily reverse in.

Beautiful3 · 21/04/2024 14:06

I'd get your drop kerb extended so that he has to move over. For now I'd reverse into your drive.

LenaLamont · 21/04/2024 14:09

Normally I'm on the side of the drive owner, but this one is just ridiculous.

If you can't reverse into a driveway you shouldn't be driving a car. This is a you problem, I'm afraid, OP, not a him problem.

If it’s wide enough to drive into you should be able to reverse in. This would enable you to be able to see whilst driving out. Neither of you should have signs up telling others not to park in front of your houses.

Yes, the OP is literally reversing her 3 kids out first as they're in the back of the car.

It's not the OP that's likely to get injured.

User1979289 · 21/04/2024 14:14

Reversing in is a much safer option - reserving out into speeding traffic round a van - why?!

DrJoanAllenby · 21/04/2024 15:46

You should always reverse into your drive.

He is parked legally.

You are the only one endangering your children.

Hoppinggreen · 21/04/2024 15:56

When DD passed her test she was really worried about reversing, despite havin g to do it in the test.
We used to go to a quite car park and practice until she was much more confident

Tel12 · 21/04/2024 16:09

You need to practice your reversing. You will become more confident with time.

Anewuser · 21/04/2024 16:24

You seem to be finding every excuse.

You say you can’t reverse in because the traffic is too busy so you get stressed but can’t accept that the same traffic must be there when you reverse out of your drive.

You say you can’t park over your own drive because the space isn’t big enough but don’t acknowledge someone must be parked on the other side of your drive then.

As many people have already said, you need to practise reversing in order to be safe or get some more driving lessons.

kitsuneghost · 21/04/2024 16:26

Could you park there instead?

kitsuneghost · 21/04/2024 16:30

SweatyRubble · 21/04/2024 11:23

What? Everyone should be reversing in and driving out, as that's the safest. I can't believe it's so uncommon that it stands out.

If you are on a busy road though. Coming home at rush hour. It is not always possible to reverse park in.
If you go forward to just beyond your gate, car behind follows onto your tail

If you indicate and slow early enough the traffic will slow and wait for you to park - they have no option!

No they won't. You could crawl up with your indicators on as much as you like, but if the car behind remains a foot from your bumper, you have no turning circle. IME the slower you go, the closer they drive.
The best you could do is get out to them by which time there is 20 cars up their bum.

Fernhurst · 21/04/2024 16:55

Reversing in might not enable the op to see through a van when coming out of her drive.

sanityisamyth · 21/04/2024 16:57

Meadowfinch · 21/04/2024 11:22

OP, kindly, if you can't reverse your own car, you shouldn't be on the road.

Why not take a couple of remedial lessons, ask the instructor to help you practise.

Absolutely this.

Fernhurst · 21/04/2024 17:26

I reverse into my drive, but I still wouldn't be able to see through a van parked up to my drive.

Flossflower · 21/04/2024 17:49

PineappleTime · 21/04/2024 12:02

You must learn to reverse in. Reversing out is so dangerous.

Totally agree with this. The Highway Code says you should reverse in and come out forwards. What are you frightened of doing? I really don’t like driving but I have no problem doing this.

Fernhurst · 21/04/2024 16:55

Quite, but she'll be able to edge forward very slowly until she gets out.

Much more preferable to reversing out and putting her 3 children at risk of getting hit in the back of the car.

Fernhurst · 22/04/2024 10:35

I still wouldn't be able to see through a van. I'd just wait til he moves and then update my insurance and start parking across my drive full time
