I think what scares me is the fact everyone speeds down the road fast and I get so flustered in doing it I’m going to moraine I think when the road is quiet and just try to keep calm I think going in backwards is my only portion

All the more reason not to reverse out the drive

Meadowfinch · 21/04/2024 11:22

OP, kindly, if you can't reverse your own car, you shouldn't be on the road.

Why not take a couple of remedial lessons, ask the instructor to help you practise.

OP didn't say she was reversing out into traffic, just that she was worried someone wouldn't see them reversing out because of the vans proximity to her driveway. It stands out when someone round here reverses into their driveway. It's noticeable because of how very rarely I see it.

What? Everyone should be reversing in and driving out, as that's the safest. I can't believe it's so uncommon that it stands out.

Marblessolveeverything · 21/04/2024 11:23

I am sorry @Senmum1981 if you are driving you should be able to complete a safe reverse. If you cannot you really shouldn't be driving. What happens if you need to reverse in the case of an emergency.

If the car fits in the drive then it will fit in reversed.

What's the OP worried about then if not traffic?

She's reversing onto a road, roads have traffic. That's her worry.

GladysHeeler · 21/04/2024 11:26

I'd get some driving lessons to practice the reversing.

And I wouldn't do anything at all that might cause any escalation of the parking issues as they can make living situations impossible.

Imgoingtobefree · 21/04/2024 11:27

I understand about the reversing into your drive. I’m not confident reversing in to spaces, so usually drive in and reverse out, on the basis I got in, so I can get out.

However, as you are having a problem, caused by white van man, I’d suggest you go somewhere quiet and practice your reversing, until you are confident enough to do your drive.

Funny enough I was never confident enough to do parallel parking on a road I often had to park in. I did a test drive in a car with rear camera and I parallel parked perfectly first time. So it goes to show that sometimes it’s confidence, not ability.

My next car will definitely have a rear camera. In an ideal world I’d have a self parking car!

KissMyArt · 21/04/2024 11:29

However, as you are having a problem, caused by white van man,

It's the OP causing the problem, not drivers who park legally?

Yes but sometimes people need to open the boot.

My drive has a 6ft fence around it. It has enough room to back in but a smaller space could mean you can't open the boot when reversed in.

Tontostitis · 21/04/2024 11:37

If you're scared of reversing into your own drive you really shouldn't be reversing out with 3 children in the car! Book a couple of driving lessons your neighbour is doing nothing wrong.

Fernhurst · 21/04/2024 11:39

Would it be easier for you to park across your own drive? That way you'd be able to see the road fine when pulling out. You'd need to update your insurance

CleftChin · 21/04/2024 11:40

Yes but sometimes people need to open the boot.

If your drive is so short that you can't open the boot when you're in your parking place then you just leave it a foot forward while you empty your boot - then you can pop it back (and consider getting a shorter car next time.

Plus then the boot is next to the house, and whatever you're getting out of the boot can't accidentally roll into the busy road.

CwmYoy · 21/04/2024 11:40

He may not be parked legally. A similar thing happened to our neighbour and the police said the van was causing an obstruction and told the owner not to park there. Talk to the police and see what they say.

Itradehorses · 21/04/2024 11:42

@SweatyRubble to be fair, I was joking. About the tyres. It does annoy me a bit though OP's neighbour is unwilling to make her life a bit easier, probably at no cost to himself. He may be parking legally, but he's still being a nob. OP could legally park her car so close to the van that it was blocked in, but not the way to behave to a neighbour is it.

Marblessolveeverything · 21/04/2024 11:42

@sashh I fail to see how in earth this prevents someone reversing. Surely you access the boot by pausing, emptying the boot then continuing reverse. In a lot of countries it is legally required to reverse.

mitogoshi · 21/04/2024 11:43

You need to reverse onto your drive. It's not safe to reverse off and can be illegal

TinkerTiger · 21/04/2024 11:44

Senmum1981 · 21/04/2024 11:12

Council refuse to put a white line across honestly I’m so scared to reverse in tried it once and got frightened

Well you have to weigh up your fear of reversing in (🙄) with your fear of you and your three children getting hit by an oncoming vehicle.

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 21/04/2024 11:48

@Senmum1981 @NigelHarmansNewWife The OP is disabled and needs to be able park on her drive and get off her drive safely disabled does not mean blind!! she has passed her test so she should be able to reverse in to her drive!

Whycantiwinmillionsandsquillions · 21/04/2024 11:51

Can you park outside your house, taking up sone of the space your neighbour normally uses?

ZekeZeke · 21/04/2024 11:53

Park across your drive right up to his kerb?

Could you perhaps have a couple of driving lessons focussing on reversing?
There are lots of techniques to help with positioning - look on YouTube too.

I would also speak with your neighbour and let them know your issues. They may not even be aware they are causing you such hardship.

In your OP you said "He parks right next to my drop kerb"?

FuzzyWuzzyWuzABear · 21/04/2024 12:01

If that's not the case and he's blocking part of your dropped kerb, you report him obviously.

PineappleTime · 21/04/2024 12:02

You must learn to reverse in. Reversing out is so dangerous.
