Good restaurant in Hereford?

Can anyone recommend one? We know Hereford well, but not its restaurants.

Not the Left Bank (unless it has got its act together in recent months - was truly awful last couple of times we went there) or the Castle Hotel (unnecessarily pretentious).

In the centre or short taxi ride outside so that both dh and I can drink.

We love the Stagg Inn at Titley, but it takes too long to get there and one of us can't drink. Something like that, but more central, would be fab.

Trying to wrack my brains, TBH we were all really excited when Pizza Express opened, which gives you some idea of the level of restaurants available in the city....

You're probably better off going down the village pub route. Are you north or south of the city?

We're going to be staying with MIL who lives about 5 minutes walk from the centre. She is babysitting (and paying - her 'congratulations on having a new baby' present ) but won't put children to bed or feed ds2, so we have between 7 and 10 pm to get wherever, eat, and return.
