ds is 2.8 and has 'belly ache'....all he can tell me is he needs to trump but can't, so it's either trapped wind or constipation.
He refuses to take any medicine, i simply can't get it into him. He's going to sleep for about 20 mins and then waking up writhing about and really squealing......

all i can do i gently rub his belly until he settles again. He's getting upset because he is so tired and obviously just wants to sleep.....

has anybody got any ideas i can try to help him shift the wind/constpation? every time he cries it's awful and i want to cry myself

( i think it's wind rather than constipation because he had a normal bowel movement today)

Poor thing. I remember this happened to my dd at about this age and I thought she had appendicitis and nearly rang 999, then she suddenly let out a gigantic fart and fell asleep instantly!

Have you tried giving him sips of warm water - perhaps with a little sugar in it?

Freckle · 30/03/2008 21:38

Try and draw his knees up to his chest. This helps the trapped wind pass down the various tubes.

If he won't take medicine, could you mix it with a drink?

seeker · 30/03/2008 21:38

Or have you got any peppermint tea?

avenanap · 30/03/2008 21:40

A warm bath can sometimes help constipation, it relaxes the muscles so that things 'flow'. He does sound constipated, it can be very painful and very uncomfortable. When was the last time he did a poo?

queenrollo · 30/03/2008 21:41

if i try and put medicine in his drink then he will refuse fluid altogether. I've tried drawing his knees up too but he's fighting me off when i do that, it's obviously more painful.......bless him, he just doesn't understand that i'm trying to help him.

Have just made some sugar water up......waiting for it to cool a bit.

my little boy is so rarely ill it's awful to see him like this

i haven't got a bath, so can't do that......

he had a poo just before lunch and it was normal....

i've suffered both myself so i know the pain he is in and i just want to make it go away for him.....

can you get him to run around and march up and down like a soldier (to get his knees up)?

otherwise, I agree, best position is to lie him down and draw his knees up or get him to crouch on all fours and stick his bum in the air like a dog!

trapped wind is horrid

Freckle · 30/03/2008 21:44

Would he tolerate a hot water bottle on his tummy?

avenanap · 30/03/2008 21:47

I would give NHS direct a call. If he had a normal poo before lunch then it may not be constipation. Are his movements normally regular? 1/2 a day?

Blu · 30/03/2008 21:47

But could it be appendicitis?

I don't know anything about appendicitis - except that if you press where it hurts it doesn't hurt when you press buut immediately afterwards.

I thinkk.

foxinsocks · 30/03/2008 21:49

yes, if it hasn't gone away soon, you may have to take him in just to be sure?

queenrollo · 30/03/2008 21:53

he seems settled for now.......

he does 1 or 2 bowel movements a day, so nothing out of the ordinary there. he has a cold and has drunk more water than usual today, i'm wondering if he's swallowed a lot of air today?

he hasn't got a temperature, and if he lies on my bed and cuddles me with me rubbing his belly he drifts back off to sleep. he's so tired, i brought him downstairs to see if i could distract him for a bit but he just sobbed that he wanted to go back in his cot.

if he's still like this in an hour or so i'll ring NHS direct and see what they say.....

I hope he's feeling better. It does not sound like constipation, maybee wind but I wouldn't say for certain. If it continues give NHS direct a ring, maybee take him to the GP in the morning.

queenrollo · 30/03/2008 22:10

well he's still asleep, and i'm off to bed myself now......

thankyou for your help......

i was up all night with ds.......eventually took him to A&E early this morning because he was in so much pain and really burning up by then.

dr said it's a viral infection, doing the rounds, causes sore throat and bad stomach cramps so ds really did have bad belly ache .....they gave him some Calpol, and he settled down pretty well then. I dropped him back at his daddy's after i left the hospital and came home for some much needed sleep.

I'm really pleased that you found out what it was and he's on the mend. I prescribe lots of cuddles and kisses

queenrollo · 31/03/2008 17:51

well the hard thing now is i have shared custody with his daddy, and he's gone back to him now. I've popped round to see him this afternoon and he was feeling poorly again after perking up after lunch.....was laid out on the sofa, holding his head but he got excited when he realised i'd gone round to drop his dinosaurs off! so i think he's ok, he's just very rarely ill so it's hard to see him like this.

They only live a 20 min drive and it's on the way to work, so i'll pop and see him every afternoon till i get him back on Friday.....

This must be really hard for you. I'm sure he'll be fine. His dad will have to get up with him through the night though so at least you'll kind of get to have a rest.

queenrollo · 31/03/2008 19:09

well his dad and i are getting on very well, he didn't ask for his daddy last night when he was ill, and he probably won't ask for me tonight, he is equally settled and comfortable with both of us so that helps.

still not easy to be away from him when he is ill, but in one way better because if his dad has a rough night then i can have him tomorrow while he rests......
