set-up screen..is this on the control panel?

OnZephyrstdayofXmas · 29/12/2004 13:40

THE SETUP SCREEN IS THE BIOS SCREEN WHERE YOU CAN ALTER THE BOOT ORDER WHEN THE PC IS STARTING UP. i'M GUESSING THAT THERE MUST BE A DEFAULT PASSWORD TO GET INTO IT BUT I DONT KNOW IT. iT'S CURRENTLY WIN98 SE DOES ANYONE KNOW IT? i DESPERATELY NEED TO PUT WIN2000 ON AS MY DARLING 18 YEAR OLD COUSIN SPENT A WEEK WHILE MY MUM WAS AWAY DOWNLOADING PORN AND HAS FILLED THE PC WITH VIRUSES AND SPYWARE!!!

Can't you just hit, erm, F2? or F1 when it's booting up?

SueW · 29/12/2004 13:47

WOuldn't you be better off getting Spybot and Adaware and some advice on cleaning up what's on there? I can't see how changing your version of windows is going to help unless you are planning to wipe the computer ocmpletely and start from scratch.

Zephyrcat · 29/12/2004 13:47

yeah that's what I'm doing but it's then asking for a password. On my old pc when it asked for a password I could just press 'enter' and it let me in. This time if i type the password wrong 3 times it just carries on into windows

Zephyrcat · 29/12/2004 13:49

I'm going to start from scratch and change win98 to win2000 but in order to do that i need to change the comp to boot from floppy drive first so i can run the new boot disks.
I have been running spybot but there's sooooo much stuff on her it freezes up after a few minutes

I think the only way to reset the password is a jumper setting (no-not a woolly one). If you don't have all the original manuals, your best bet is a search on the internet on your type of computer & motherboard. Hopefully you should get a plan of the motherboard you have and a diagram showing which jumper is which. Find the CMOS/BIOS password reset one or you may have to reset the entire CMOS/BIOS and remove/move the jumper and reboot.

OK - a jumper is a bit of black plastic probably rectangular about 1/4 cm in size with two pin sized holes in. This will be probably be plugged onto two sticking up wires of a row of three. So you may need to take out the jumper entirely or move it to cover the other two wires.

Good Luck
Debbie

ok I have found lots of 'backdoor' passwords but none seem to work. I can't find how to do the jumper - or at least i haven't found it written so a 6 yearold could understand!!!

Debbiethemum · 29/12/2004 15:02

What sort of computer do you have? Make, model & processor speed please. I will try and have a look

Zephyrcat · 29/12/2004 15:20

I've found a green jumper and taken it off but made no difference so going to put it back! The computer is a 'Time'. Sysytem model: Time Computer Systems Windows 98SE. 500mHz AMD K6_2w/3DNow! 16kb primary memory cache
BIOS: American Megatrends 0626
Board: MSI Inc. Aladdin5 ver 1:0

Is that the right info? Thanks for your help!! You wouldn't think I'm the computer nerd of the family would you??

Zephyrcat · 01/01/2005 19:30

was it maybe here ? If not, try having a look at zdnet.co.uk you can get downloads for anything and everything you could possibly need on there!!!

lindaUK · 01/01/2005 22:14

Thanks Zephyrcat, both of them look good so I will have a good look at them later when I have time.
