Hit the hay

Have been misinterpreting an acronym on here for ages. I thought HTH was "Hit the hay" and meant "Get out of here" in the American sense of stop being silly or talking rubbish.

Has anyone else misunderstood an acronym/word meaning in real life or here on Mumsnet? 😅

I thought so too!! What DOES it mean then??

cakebaker39 · 25/02/2024 10:21

Hope that helps! I think, anyway!

CheerfulBardo · 25/02/2024 10:21

It means ‘hope that helps’, and can be used either genuinely, or in a sarcastic way, after suggesting Googling.

DuckOffAWatersBack · 25/02/2024 10:46

@DiscoBeat, you thought it meant "Hit the hay" too? Must come from somewhere then!

I knew it meant "hope that helps" but I always thought "hit the hay" meant going to bed to sleep.

JellyBeanFactory · 25/02/2024 10:50

HTH = Hope that helps

Doesn't 'hit the hay' mean go to bed?

DuckOffAWatersBack · 25/02/2024 10:50

@Needmorelego. Aha! That makes sense now. Every day's a school day.

I just checked because I was curious. Yep....

Hit the hay
CheerfulBardo · 25/02/2024 10:51

‘Hit the hay’ is used to mean ‘going to bed’ — somewhat archaic these days, I’d have said. Like ‘hit the sack’.

(Though I don’t think the phrase actually dates from the days when mattresses were hay-stuffed, anyway, so I suppose always archaic in a sense’?

Ive never heard it used as you suggest.

DuckOffAWatersBack · 25/02/2024 10:52

Can't imagine how anyone could comfortably fall asleep on hay, but farm work is tiring so maybe after getting up at 4am...

Yes Hit the hay means going to bed/sleep. 'Mattresses' used to be filled with hay which you slept on.

DuckOffAWatersBack · 25/02/2024 10:53

@CheerfulBardo, a hay-based mattress makes more sense haha.

Thanks, I had guessed after finding out I was wrong that it meant Hit The Hills. So that was wrong too!
