You reluctantly concede you are indeed a living breathing liberalpinko cliche when...

You're capable of dithering for a full five minutes between the Organic and the Fair Traded bananas

You vividly remember the first time you took a deep, transgressive breath and bought South African produce

You used to think sex shops were the most oppressive places out, and now you think they're a necessary element of self expression

If and when you find out you're not on any secret lists (insert files, phone-taps, etc, as appropriate) you'll be terribly miffed

Your children's stockings have fair-traded chocolate coins in them

And, for our more mature members...
A secret part of you feels nostalgia for the 80s, because You Knew Where You Were with Thatcher

If someone shouts 'Maggie Maggie Maggie' at you, you'll respond automatically.

I could go on

reclaim the night, safe street at nights...
the nineties sloganeers just weren't as good as the 80s ones

OldieMum · 23/12/2004 16:43

I once lost my voice from shouting on an Oxford Reclaim the Night march. Actually, central Oxford is so horrible at night now that I think they need to revive the marches.

OldieMum · 23/12/2004 16:44

And the Private Shop on the Cowley Rd is STILL IN BUSINESS.

motherinfestivemood · 23/12/2004 16:48

Ah, but do you feel about it the same way?

The inferiorettes are also getting organic non-air-freighted clementines in their stockings .

OldieMum · 23/12/2004 16:51

I'm too old to reverse my position on porn. I still think it's horrible and exploits people.

motherinfestivemood · 23/12/2004 16:55

me too , but like many a liberalpinko cliche I've found myself thinking that yer actual Sex Aids are different, albeit obviously better from a small locally based outlet than an exploitative multinational

OP posts:
OldieMum · 23/12/2004 16:59

Organic sex aids, anyone?

motherinfestivemood · 23/12/2004 16:59

Non air freighted, obviously.

happymerryberries · 23/12/2004 17:00

And I still think that porn debases and exploits women.....way too old to change now.

FeastofStevenmom · 23/12/2004 17:01

i've become less tolerant of the sex trade with age - rather than seeing things like spearmint rhino as a bit of a giggle, i've become more concerned particularly as to use of coercion/trafficked women in the sex trade

OldieMum · 23/12/2004 17:04

To go back to the question - I can never catch up with Oldiedad, who cut his political teeth in the anti-Vietnam War movement, worked in a Communist Party bookshop and made the mistake of moving to the UK just after Thatcher got elected. But he's mellowed a lot since.

paolosgirl · 23/12/2004 17:14

I was bought up by two raging Tories - both my sister and I are now left-wing, public sector workers and fully paid members of a union. Mum is horrified - but is convinced it's just a phase

Caligulights · 23/12/2004 17:20

I always feel like throwing red paint whenever I walk past Ann Summers. But perhaps it's just the effect of the ghastly Josephine Gold (is that her name?) the procuress of the whole establishment.

Enideepmidwinter · 23/12/2004 17:48

Ooh I went on the Reclaim the Night marches in Cambridge, they were a right laugh, can't remember the chant though. Didnt pay my poll tax either although they never seemed to catch up with me.

WideWebWitch · 23/12/2004 17:54

I was in an anti poll tax union in Bristol and was prepared to go to prison for non payment. I quite liked the idea of martydom at the time IIRC but they didn't do me for it let alone bang me up!

WideWebWitch · 23/12/2004 17:55

Should have added 'guv' to the end of that sentence!

oopsanta · 23/12/2004 19:29

OMG reclaim the night!
When I first took ds to toddlers and they started twinkle twinkle little star with the triangle actions- I wanted to shout "reclaim the night!" but really didn't know who would laugh and who i'd have to explain it all too.
Thanks for this thread, am suferring horrible ms and a cold right now and this is the only thing that has made me smile all days (except some custard for some reason )

happymerryberries · 23/12/2004 19:36

Sisterhood it stong!

In the spirit of total non-competetivenes (right on!)

Can I raise you, lifetime membership of the Womens Press Book club!

miranda2 · 23/12/2004 19:38

You decide that 'this is the way the ladies ride...' is sexist, and rewrite it (this is the way the teachers ride...the lawyers ride...the farmer rides)...

happymerryberries · 23/12/2004 19:41

I refused to sing 'Clap hands clap hands' the way my mother did as it used to end, 'Daddy's got money and mummy's got none'

Berchta · 23/12/2004 19:47

dannie that was fab! but what would the action be?

i dont tick any boxes here and i dont know whether thats a good thing or not i am rather leaning to yes!

although i did just now have a conversation as i do most years but it always gets more elaborate which went like this

santa killed the tooth fairy over money, the toothfairy is dead and santa has been put away. consequently mrs claus couldnt cope and ran off with the easter bunny
" i read it in the sun" says dh
" the fuckin sun?" says i
" we dont get the sun" says ds (15)
dh looks at my cross face and concedes "ok the guardian

alexsmum · 24/12/2004 00:19

i held out on paying my poll tax until my court date came through and then i lost my bottle and paid it!
does anyone remember the day that thatcher lost her job? what a celebration we had in the student union that day!

spacedonkey · 24/12/2004 00:19

I do remember we all cried in our house the day thatch got in

alexsmum · 24/12/2004 00:25

i'm too young to remember her getting in! she was just a fact of life growing up!

MarsselectionboxLady · 24/12/2004 00:40

I was on honeymoon when Mrs Thatcher went out. We were in Costa Del Retirement playing Bingo oh the shame.... The caller said "Number 10 Maggie's Den, lost her wager, now it's Major".
