i need to patch up bits of the cement on the fireback as it's crumbling a bit...has anyone done this before?

do i really need to use a lime mix for this (will not be using it as an open fire) and what is the best mortar mix for this sort of job? also, where can i buy special fireplace paint as B&Q don't stock it!

ours is a bit cracked and we are still lighting fires in it

usaually if the back brick is cracked alot and you use the fire you have to replace but as you are not using it I would just buy a bag of the just add water mortar from b&q!
