Why have you missed out middle class? That's largely the MN demographic

tescocreditcard · 29/11/2023 13:20

working class, because i work for a living.

I'd say the largest MN demographic was working class. You're only middle class if you send, or could afford to send but choose not to, your kids to private school. In my book anyway.

So do barristers and surgeons but they're unlikely to be working class

It's a little more nuanced than that!

I have intentionally ignored the Middle Class because most people put them selves into this category. Filthy rich or Filthy poor has negative connotations that's why I am interested how many people openly identify them selves as either poor or rich.

Never heard that before.

There are plenty of wc people who have come into money and send their dc to private school. Have you ever watched Rich House Poor House? The money has not suddenly made them middle class.

Ibizabar · 29/11/2023 13:29

Not all WC people are 'filthy poor'

AgnesX · 29/11/2023 13:31

Upper working class actually. Educated but not a professional.

feralunderclass · 29/11/2023 13:32

I'm underclass on paper. Been on benefits for 15+ years due to caring for disabled ds. I grew up LMC, grammar school, went to university, post grad in RG in a subject that is associated with MC. I'm well travelled. Dc also went to grammar school and now RG university to read subjects that are typically MC.

WarningOfGails · 29/11/2023 13:33

Think the suggestion that you’re only middle class if you can afford private school is bizarre.

Mrsjayy · 29/11/2023 13:34

I'm working class upper class is usually aristocratic or landed gentry going back generations are they not?

WarningOfGails · 29/11/2023 13:35

actually my kids are probably the first generation of my family to attend state school. Doesn’t make me working class.

TheCatfordCat · 29/11/2023 13:36

Skilled working class with a middle-class income. Sorry OP.

The middle class is important though. Just like other social classes, they have a culture and a wage bracket. You can't ignore them.

Jasmin1971 · 29/11/2023 13:37

I've got two biology degrees and zero cash because I am now disabled, WTF does that make me🤣

That’s not the definition of middle class. I mean irs fine to make up your own definition in your head. But you’d need to expect a few eye rolls.

if you’re unsure of the official definitions you can google.

TheCatfordCat · 29/11/2023 13:44

@tescocreditcard I don't think that's correct. Private school is still out of reach to many MC people. And many don't want to send their kids private.

IncompleteSenten · 29/11/2023 13:47

Working class.
My dad was a miner (until the pits closed then he went to uni and trained as a teacher)
My mum was a sahm then got a job as a domestic supervisor at a hospital.

My dad's dad was a miner, his mum was a sahm. My mum's dad was an engineer at the pit and her mum was a secretary at a hospital.

Go back generations and it's all miners and farmers.

I was brought up on a council estate in a mining village.

I am working class because my ancestors were working class.

PingPowKaPowWow · 29/11/2023 13:48

I would argue that people mostly inherit their class from their parents.

I know plenty of rich working class people, and would not label them MC. They have no cultural capital

I know plenty of MC people on a very low budget, but are in no way WC

I would say that class is based on cultural capital, and how people carry themselves, it's based on manners, accent, education, and cultural capital which is largely decided by the opportunities afforded throughout childhood, ergo, inherited via parental influence and fiscal status.

PingPowKaPowWow · 29/11/2023 13:50

I'm working class, but do not present as such.

HeraSyndulla · 29/11/2023 13:51

Neither.

CurlewKate · 29/11/2023 13:51

Middle class is nothing to do with money. None of the class categories are.

CurlewKate · 29/11/2023 13:53

You'd get a more interesting answer IMHOif you asked people to say whether they were rich or poor.

PiggieWig · 29/11/2023 13:55

I’m working class but don’t identify as poor. I’m a single parent, I work full time, own my home (terrace in WC northern town), earn below national average. Manage a holiday approximately every 5 years, usually off the back of a tax rebate or similar.
However I’m educated to post grad level.
Working class does not equal ‘filthy poor’.

Now, why do you ask?
