Upper Class or Working Class
SoundTheSirens · 29/11/2023 13:58

Working class. Both my parents grew up in council houses and I was born into a council flat. I didn't go to university because I had to work to contribute to the family income after A levels, as money was always an issue for my parents. I live in an ex-council house with a high level of social housing hereabouts, in the village in which I grew up which is within an area of economic deprivation. My husband is no longer able to work and claims disability benefits.

Beautiful3 · 29/11/2023 13:58

What about middle class? You've missed out a whole class!

Bigcoffeemug · 29/11/2023 13:59

I think there's a whole spectrum of people. I'd probably call myself upper working or lower middle. DH and I both have professional qualifications and we aren't skint (any more) but we didn't go to private school, couldn't afford to send our kids to it (and don't agree with it anyway). We have never been skiing or to an opera/classical music concert, we buy clothes from the supermarket/high street, shop at Asda/Aldi/Lidl... Are those even class markers?

BibbyBobbyBoo · 29/11/2023 13:59

Class is largely based on how much cultural, social and economic capital a person possesses, which more often than not is passed down/shared through generations? It isn't as simple as wealth or career choice, is it?

Tulipsroses · 29/11/2023 14:02

I'm sorry I didn't want to offend anyone. It's just both of the extremes have some negative perceptions and most people would like to think they are more middle ground. I'm more interested in people who say I'm proud to be working class because..... or I'm proud to be upper class because .......

To quote Micky Flanagan, I'm working class with middle class trappings!

I am old and working class

Elite according to this, but not sure that anyone would be able to tell from day to day life... I would presume that it equates with upper class, but I definitely don't feel like that's accurate

funbags3 · 29/11/2023 14:04

Why are we so obsessed with class in this country?

IncompleteSenten · 29/11/2023 14:05

Can you be proud of something that is an accident of birth rather than an achievement?

I'm not proud of being working class. I simply am working class. I'm working class because my parents were. And their parents.

I didn't take a class, pass a test or overcome massive personal hurdles to achieve working class, erm, ness I guess 😁. So what pride is there in being it?

I'm not ashamed either for the same reason. I didn't do anything to be it. It just is.

it says I'm established middle class I mean established!

SoundTheSirens · 29/11/2023 14:08

I should add that our house growing up was always full of books and I read voraciously, so I feel I can hold my own in all but the most esoteric post-modern conversations, and my parents made sure I learned table manners etc. I hold down a traditionally MC job now and do it well; I have also had experiences in the past where I've worked with predominantly upper and upper-MC people and was viewed as some kind of cute little novelty with my particular regional accent and lack of degree 🙄

I am old and working class

Apparently I belong to the "Emergent service workers" class group....whatever the heck that is.

Applesaarenttheonlyfruit · 29/11/2023 14:09

According to the BBC I’m Elite. I wouldn’t however translate that into Upper Class as I have no aristocracy in my heritage. We are wealthy middle class.

Silkiefloof · 29/11/2023 14:14

I come out as technical middle class on that BBC survey.

CurlewKate · 29/11/2023 14:15

I'm established middle class.Could have told them that!

Mrsjayy · 29/11/2023 14:16

I came out as established middle class I think its because I know a couple of Dr's and an accountant😂

ComtesseDeSpair · 29/11/2023 14:16

I’m working class with a lot of money. I use Americanisms with abandon and enjoy it, I like material goods, and I don’t care a dime what other people think about my lifestyle, my possessions, my choices, or my values - which I gather is a core requirement for being middle class.

mantyzer · 29/11/2023 14:16

Working class. Admin worker, DP is a carer. Both come from families with working class jobs.

kitsuneghost · 29/11/2023 14:16

Professional class.
lower class have hijacked working class.
I have a professional job but am too poor for middle class

DoktorPeppa · 29/11/2023 14:17

Tulipsroses · 29/11/2023 13:26

I have intentionally ignored the Middle Class because most people put them selves into this category. Filthy rich or Filthy poor has negative connotations that's why I am interested how many people openly identify them selves as either poor or rich.

You didn't say anything about poor or rich in your OP. You said working or upper class. You do know that lots of working class people are pretty well off?

RedToothBrush · 29/11/2023 14:20

tescocreditcard · 29/11/2023 13:21

I'd say the largest MN demographic was working class. You're only middle class if you send, or could afford to send but choose not to, your kids to private school. In my book anyway.

You live in the SE don't you?

Do you not think it's insulting to imply all working-class people are 'filthy poor', OP? I'm from a working-class background and my family has never been filthy poor, whatever that even means.

Why would you even make this assumption?

Jumbalya0367 · 29/11/2023 14:21

I would say I’m working class I suppose, however I’ve never seen why this is such a common question on MN. Does anybody really care what class someone is in this day and age? I don’t care what class I am or am perceived to be, curious if other people do really care?
