we had invited our neighbours from our previous house, lovely old lady and her husband,

they told my mum they could not make it.

Have passed her many times since, said a quick 'hello' mainly from a distance, not had a real conversation at all.

My mum is moving house and just brought round some of my stuff left there,

she had an unopened 'christmas card' for us.

I opened it and its from my old neighbour for our wedding with £50 inside!!

I am mortified!

She thinks we havent thanked her! She thinks we are awful ungrateful people!

Mum said someone must have 'put it away' on the big day but never told anyone?!

My god I feel awful! What should I do?

Flowers? Thankyou card...apology card?!

Own up tell the truth thank her and move on.

Thank you card. simply saying what happened (you don't need to apologise, you didn't do anything!) and thanking her and saying that it is a lovely, timely surprise and you are going to treat yourself!

Hulababy · 09/03/2008 18:13

Tell her the truth, and send your thanks now.

I am sure they will just be happy to know what has happened and won't have anny hard feelings.

ScienceTeacher · 09/03/2008 18:13

Tell the truth, and gush about the very welcome surprise.

OracleInaCoracle · 09/03/2008 18:14

agree, either pop round to thank her in person or write a note.

somersetmum · 09/03/2008 18:15

Go and see her now, if you can, or a.s.a.p.
Take the 'Christmas Card' with you, so she can see that you have only just received it. Say thank you, maybe take her a photo from your wedding?

MrsJohnCusack · 09/03/2008 18:15

yes, just send them a card explaining all this & thanking them effusively! they'll understand (unless they're bonkers, in which case, their problem really)

agree with somersetmum
