One of the mums at toddlers was telling us how one of her relatives buys a new car every 6 months! They upgrade to the newer model. I would only ever buy a new car if I won the Lotto because they depreciate too much. My dad has never owned a brand new car. Better recycle and buy used!

We had to get another car last November as some bugger broke into ours (R'97 Hyundai) and the insurance wrote it off! My dad offered us his P'96 Honda Civic but I couldn't get the seatbelt round me with a coat on! In the end, we went for a W'2000 Scenic, which is lovely!

Flibbertyjibbet - i've been busy recording Rainbow Fish for your DS!

Mind you when I passed my driving test (9th attempt) we sold our good car and brought a sound but old banger, which was a good idea as it gave me confidence.

We have 2 10 year old cars, (Saab and Range Rover) and will drive them until they fall apart. In Belgium you can't tell the year of the car from the plate, so it doesn't matter, and I can never work out why you'd want to take the depreciation hit on a new car. The money goes on expensive kit for DHs glider instead, and supports my Amazon habit.

SheikYerbouti · 06/03/2008 07:55

I have a V reg Volvo (not that old I know) that's done 190,000 miles. I am thinking of replacing it - bit only because it's high milage and is styarting to go wrong a lot

I will replace it with a car of the same typoe, probaboly. I would never but a car that's less then 3 or 4 years old anyway - what's the point? They lose their value in a heartbeat. I paid 2 grand for mine, and will probably get most of that back part ex.

brimfull · 06/03/2008 08:01

mine is y reg -how old is that?

Haven't got a clue.

needmorecoffee · 06/03/2008 08:08

do you reckon people will think I'm worthwhile now with a brand new car sat outside?
Maybe I'll take the motability stickers off or they'll realise its not mine for keeps.....
Actually, cos of the wheelchaired one, we'll always have a new car.
I'm so lucky....

Fillyjonk · 06/03/2008 08:11

oh god, i just want the smallest car I can get away with really, provided it does ok in the ncap tests

this needing a big wankmobile nonsense is just...vulgar

peanutbear · 06/03/2008 08:12

I have an N reg Toyota estima, every one at my DS2 Nursery looks down on me and thinks I am poor

So does driving a car like this make me look poor??

Fillyjonk · 06/03/2008 08:21

I know what it is

wtf is wrong with being poor?

tbh I always assume that everyone with a new/clean car (can't actually tell the difference unless I look at the numberplate ) has them on a loan they can't really afford.

sandcastles · 06/03/2008 08:26

I have an old car....it is around 20 yrs old.

MIL had it, SIL had it & now I have it. I have been driving for 3 months, makes sense to us for me to have an old car, while still relatively inexperienced.

We could easily afford for me to have a newer car, but I am happy with the one I have, FIL has looked after it for the last 15 years, so we know it runs good!

Don't see the problem myself!

jumpingbeans · 06/03/2008 08:27

on my list of priorities, the car comes,, well it's not even on the list,as long as it goes it's fine with me, mind you if I won the lottery.

No, not at all. They might have different priorities in terms of spending - holidays, hobbies, education, etc. Nothing wrong with having an old car and just keeping it until it dies.

UnquietDad · 06/03/2008 09:52

Other way round, usually. I know people who spend lots of money on holidays, mortgage and/or school fees, and the car comes way down the list.

BIL (DW's bro) thinks he has "made it" because he has a brand-new BMW on his drive. In fact, some of his friends told him this. He and his wife were not impressed that DW and I couldn't have given less of a shit about his car.

UnquietDad · 06/03/2008 09:53

(sorry, I am disagreeing with postulation in OP and therefore agreeing with muffin, lest it appears the other way round)
