What about people who have lots of cars ?? Some old some new, what does that say then ??

My dad has erm.....4, i think, at the moment. Mind you one is a bright yellow NY cab and one is an american pick up truck.

rookiemater · 05/03/2008 22:07

I shouldn't think so. new cars are a complete waste of money, start depreciating the minute they leave the showroom. I drive a crap old banger bought of friends leaving the country. Would much rather spend any extra money on a fab holiday.

Bubbaloo · 05/03/2008 22:07

Not at all.
I have a 14 year old Fiesta which I love and have no intention of changing it,even though I can afford a new car.

okay okay! calm down . dh and I have been discussing this recently..we have an old people carrier with 120 000 miles on the clock. it works perfectly well and is utterly reliable, hence we hav'nt changed it. it is slightly scruffy looking, but not a total heap yet! a few things have happened,..small things..that made me think perhaps some of our friends/colleagues think we are struggling financially..hence i was just trying to find out how most people think

no
at least they own it

Flibbertyjibbet · 05/03/2008 22:10

My car is 12 years old. I saved up and paid cash for it new and am about to change it for another car that I have saved up for. My house is paid for. My partners car is also older and paid for. We maintain them well and they run well and as we keep them so long and don't pay loan interest/leasing etc the cost per year is low.
He also has a sports car (kit car) that he built when he was single and had the time and money.
Three years ago my friend turned up in a new Suzuki Jimny (ugh) I asked her why she didn't say she had a new car and she said 'I didn't want you to be jealous' Eh??? Hers was on 100% finance!
If people driving newer cars that they bought on credit, think that I am not well off because my car is older, who gives a shit?

expatinscotland · 05/03/2008 22:12

They have an emissions test, KM.

FWIW, we have two cars.

You need them out here because this is a rural area with no public transport - one car goes and you need another one.

We got them both for free! One's an R reg Clio and the other's a P reg Vauxhall Astra.

They work and they beat cycling a bike on a windy country road in the pouring rain for 12 miles till you get to town.

paddingtonbear1 · 05/03/2008 22:13

dh and I have always had older cars - to begin with cos we were poor, but not now. I prefer them! Our car stays on the drive most of the week anyway!

LadyOfWaffle · 05/03/2008 22:13

Heh, on the other end of the scale DH gets either 7 series BMWs, S classes or Grand Voyagers as part of his job (all under 3 years old), and we are poor as church mice! TBH, it's amazing how different you are treated depending on what car you get out of.

littlepiggie · 05/03/2008 22:14

My mum amd dad had an old car for a while, but have a house with 4 living rooms, so erm, no.

Twinklemegan · 05/03/2008 22:14

DH much prefers older cars because you can work on them yourself. Our current car is just on the wrong side of that line, with that stupid computer controlling everything. The orange light has been coming on and off for months now - god knows why but it's bound to be expensive.

padboz · 05/03/2008 22:15

I drive a pile-a-shite 14 year old car that annoys my boss cos it makes his car park look bad in the photos of the offices. I could buy any car I wanted though - mainly because I don't

BoysOnToast · 05/03/2008 22:15

lol at 4 living rooms.
yeah, i think that qualifies as not doing too badly on the monetary front

PuppyMonkey · 05/03/2008 22:15

I'm one of those people who wouldn't know the difference between an old car and a new car. Is it red? Yes. Is it silver? Yes. That's the only kind of thing I notice...

Chipstick · 05/03/2008 22:15

Having worked in a bank for the last ten years I can guarantee you that 9 times out of 10 the guy who pulls up in a porsche outside is up to his eyes in credit agreements & the guy with the Ford Cortina is loaded

Lilymaid · 05/03/2008 22:16

Someone I work for, who is one of the best paid in one of the best paid professions, still runs a mid-1980s Saab. He is just not interested in cars and provided it goes and is comfortable that is good enough for him even though he could buy a top of the range Merc every year and hardly notice it.

Twinklemegan · 05/03/2008 22:16

What I do tend to notice, as well as the colour, is whether the car is clean and tidy or not. Sadly ours would fail on that score at the moment.

I have a 10 yo toyota (as I mentioned on a thread a couple of days ago, getting paranoid...!)It's fab! We also have an older zafira for child/ dog transport purposes, but we previously had a K reg mazda that DH bought off a bloke on his boat for £800- one of the best cars we ever had! Would still be going strong if DH hadn't pranged it! As others have said, I'd rather spend my money on my house/ kids. To my mind its just a complete waste of money, when they depreciate so quickly.

Expat- my dad sounds like yours!! He is a manager in a large factory, and they all used to snigger at him before he was forced to get a company car (!) because he had a far older car than the people he managed! He's great at fixing up old cars, and is training DH to do the same!

expatinscotland · 05/03/2008 22:20

It is here in Scotland, too, KM. Unless you have personalised plates.
