I live on a housing estate, not that large compared to some but big enough.

There are some not very nice people/families on here too and when i lived in a flat on here i made a few enemies becuae i didn't behave as they all did, in otherwords general anti social behaviour, criminal activites etc.

I got a reputation for being stuck up, which i am not, and it did bother me for a while but then i thoiught so what, i don't want to fit in witht them, i am a decent human being and my kids are brought up properly and taught right from wrong, not aloud to roam the streets causing trouble etc.

We have now moved to a house on the same estate and my new next door neighbour is a bit of a wheeler dealer. I have decided to keep my distance and have done with any other neighboiurs whom i feel are not nice iykwim.

How old are you kids ??? Perhaps it would be best to meet some moms at the school, where you can suss them out a bit first.

Basically i would just try and suss a few people out and then try and make friends with the less rough ones.

I do sound like a snob don't I

I'm in a biggish estate in SE London, in a tower block though, not a house (I'm DESPERATE for a house...) We've been in the flat now for about 8 years and have just gradually made friends with people in the block itself. I don't know if it's because it's flats rather than a house and / or close to central London but our block is full of such a mixture of people from failed t.v. presenters to widows in their 80's and even a couple of transsexuals, it's been fairly easy to fit in, weird though I am ...

I live on a council estate. NOt a huge one, but bigger than some. Mine's got a bad reputation with other areas, but I've lived here all my life, and I've never had any problems....! I think some people are a be to quick to pre-judge when you say you live on a council estate. As for making an effort to fit in, I went to a school out of the area, so I didn't really know that many other kids, but now I have my son, I've started getting friendly with some people on the estate, and they're the nicest people I've met! The beauty about friends, is you CAN choose them.....! There are some rough people on the estate, as there are in most areas, but you just avoid them and make friends with the people you have more in common with.
Hope this doesn't sound nasty.....!

I live on a big private estate (mod) and ours is so bitchey it's unreal, so out of choice i've learnt the hard way not to really have much to do with anyone on the estate apart from 2/3 people.
