Flying long haul after a hip replacement

DH is due to have a hip replacement at the beginning of October but need to travel to San Diego for work post surgery. We're trying to shift dates as best we can but it's not easy plus the surgery date may also be moved last minute, so many unknowns!

Anyway, anyone any experience of travelling long haul post hip replacement? Any tips on comfort etc How soon were you fit to fly post op?

I'd be worried about the DVT risk and a quick Google says 3months for long hall flying.

If the op is on October, the soonest he should fly is January. There’s already a significant risk of DVT with hip replacement surgery, hence pressure tights and daily injections to prevent clotting. Flying multiplies that risk. A DVT is bad enough if it stays in the leg, but if it shifts to the heart, lungs or brain it could kill. He really should cancel his trip.

Thank you both, duly noted. He has a pre-op on the 15th and I've suggested he asks questions then but on looking into travel insurance, it also mentions having been discharged from post-op care.

Common sense says no to long haul so soon, DH is one of those people that thinks rules/guidelines don't apply to him but in this case it's non-negotiable.
