Not sure what to do, go with my gut or not?

I am waiting to hear the results of an interview but i am not sure that if offered i would take the job.It is doing the job i do know but with lots of house calls. As i am a very inexperienced driver i feel that i may be putting myself under undue pressure.I do need a job badly as i am redundant the end of march but my gut says no iykwim.I know i haven't even been offered anything yet so am being premature but i need to know for when they call me.
I want to do a job that i feel happy with but i dont want to regret turning down the opportunity of work.
I have turned a couple of other jobs down because the salary was so poor and despite me only working part time i really depend on a certain income, which although not much is more than minimum wage.
I would hate to do a job and hate it.
Also i have a couple of other interviews scheduled for next month one of which would be my dream job.
Is there any way i can put off acceptance if offered or am i being too picky?

Help what would you do?

If it really is only the driving that is putting you off this one, then I'd say don't worry too much about that as long as you are basically okay to drive and have a reliable car. Within a few weeks you will be used to it (and the practise will be good) - you probably won't give it a second thought after a while.

The dream job is more tricky, if the first job is of a type that is likely to come up again soon, then the dream job may be worth holding out for.

Of course so much will depend on their decision making timescales, and whether or not you are offered each job.

Could you arrange to temp or something in the meantime so you have a source of income? Good luck

Beauregard · 28/02/2008 10:53

The driving does worry me mainly because i cannot park and it would involve navigating my way to areas i have never driven to but also rather than being based in one place i will be in and out of homes and i am concerned that there would be lots of unpaid waiting around in between calls.I do like working with people and this job will involve mainly lone working.
Agghhh i just dont know?
They are going to get back to me the end of the week they said.

I have accepted bank work form another company but obviously it wouldn't be a reliable income and some months there may be no work.

Sounds like it's not just the driving then, I'd hold out for one that you're really happy with, and go with some temping in the meantime

Beauregard · 01/03/2008 22:00

Well they offered me a position via letter and i have to call them with a response.
Shit i am so confused right now, redundancy may just about finish me off.

ouch... go with the 'gut' instinct, i think. If you have a hunch that this isn't the one for you, then it isn't.... and get the confidence from the successful interview to knock 'em dead in the other "dream job" interviews.
If you are desperate to keep the offer on reserve, can't you be "away from home" for a couple of weeks? some mysterious holiday or family gathering type thing just to postpone things?

Beauregard · 02/03/2008 23:27

thanks for replying gigglewitch

That was what i was thinking ,i need a way of stalling for a bit more time....
ideas very welcome

I'm having a deja vu now.......

Beauregard · 02/03/2008 23:29

pros-I would have a job following redundancy so would get to spend the very small amount i will be getting jobs done round the house.

It is working with the client group i like

Cons-Lots of driving,short journeys ,navigation,parking etc

I have only been driving 3 months

Will probably involve mainly lone working and i love team working

I dont feel excited about it

take the job and apply for more.

gain more experience in a different areas ( inc driving)

if finances allow perhaps you can
get a sat nav

or
get some refresher lessons - maybe just 2x2hour lessons focussing specifically on parking.

gigglewitch · 02/03/2008 23:41

WRT cons - get a sat-nav and a life-size "friend" doll/picture for your car???
nope, that's starting to sound kinky

bugger it. you've got family in, erm, New Zealand / New York / New Brighton and you have to go there urgently

TurkeyLurkey · 02/03/2008 23:43

If being part of a team is important to you it'll probably do your head in after a bit being on your lonesome. I find it soul destroying if I work alone.

If you're not excited about it thats a big teller too.

Is it subject to a police check because they can take ages to do?

gigglewitch · 02/03/2008 23:43

custy talks sense at this hour of the night.

As you can see, I do NOT

Beauregard · 02/03/2008 23:44

sat nav so not an option unfortunately

The interview for the job i really really want is on the 10th

OP posts:
Beauregard · 02/03/2008 23:45

yes it does state subject to a CRB

OP posts:
TurkeyLurkey · 02/03/2008 23:46

Stall them if its on the 10th.

I am no good at lying so can't suggest any situations you can invent.

gigglewitch · 02/03/2008 23:47

result! The most recent CRB we put through on 2nd Jan got back last Thursday. If they tell you it takes three weeks they are lying I make it much nearer eight
lucky for you

TurkeyLurkey · 02/03/2008 23:48

Another option is to accept. You wouldn't be able to start until the CRB came through and they can take up to 6 weeks. By then you will have had the other interview and know if you've got that one.

Bobs your uncle etc etc

gigglewitch · 02/03/2008 23:49

uncle bob indeed

Beauregard · 02/03/2008 23:51

But is it really shitty to accept and then let them down in the end?
Then i would need to think of excuse ?
Would i have to pay for the CRB?

aghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

OP posts:
TurkeyLurkey · 02/03/2008 23:51

Everyones a winner!
Sorted!
and..it doesn't involve any fib telling.
Where is she?.....I want to go to bed and can't rest until she has agreed to our cunning plan

TurkeyLurkey · 02/03/2008 23:53

Why would you need to think of an exuse?...you'd just tell them that your dream job came up.....you're really sorry to let them down blah blah blah.

gigglewitch · 02/03/2008 23:55

stop being so polite. do what's best for you. They are likely to have a 'reserve' for the post just in case you decided not to take it (we always do) and so you need not feel shitty etc. No need for excuses, just tell them that you have been offered another post at the same time, which you have decided to accept. no need for excessive explaining.

TurkeyLurkey · 02/03/2008 23:57

gigglewitch..are you my long lost twin??? Were we seperated at birth.....
