Advice please

My family recently returned from holiday...My DD1 had several clusters bites overnight which were quite itchy. My DD2 who was in the same room had a few but they bothered her less.

A day or two afterwards, we found a whole dead adult bedbug on the landing upstairs. After this I also found multiple black marks and splats of what I assume was old blood (GROSS , I know) on the white sheets.

We showed the dead creature to the air b&b owners, which they downplayed and took away. Initially they said they doubted they were BBs, then after closer scrutiny, decided they might be. They changed all the bedding and said they couldn't find anything else.

Since coming home, I have been absolutely frantic about cleaning everything on a hot wash, quarantining and freezing things. I have been religiously checking bedding, mattresses, carpets.

I have found two casings/exoskeletons since- could they be BBs? I usually wouldn’t be analysing every speck of dirt as I am now, so perhaps they’re other creatures?

DD1 is extremely anxious and has ADHD/Autism, so I have been trying to downplay/disguise these issues…however, I am extremely anxious and among other life-stressors, it’s beginning to make me ill. I can’t sleep and I am constantly checking and imagining the worst.

I know in reality, they are a resilient and annoying pest but pose no health risk and can eventually be sorted. However, I am extremely worried!!

Re the air b&b, we haven’t addressed it again as we didn’t really want to make a fuss at the time (esp with the children in situ) and didn’t know how to handle it.

Any advice or keen entomologists out there?

Thank you!

I was looking for advice on a mattress but for some strange reason ended up reading about bed bugs (haha). My sister had a problem with this a few months ago and washed/cleaned everything but now she swears by MicroFresh (or Micro-Fresh) sheets. She went on a spending spree on the Clair de Lune website and got their protector, duvet and cot bed sheets. I don't know if they make any difference but she swears by them after her outbreak but note that her daughter has sensitive skin too!

www.clair-de-lune.co.uk if you want to check them out. She got them a few months ago so assume they still do them :)

Hi @Megz80 how are you getting on? BB are one of my biggest fears so I am always on high alert when coming back from holiday. I wouldn't be overly worried about the things on the photos.

I spoke to a pest controller specialised in bed bugs before when I thought we may have them (thanks anxiety!) And he said when he finds exoskeletons they are almost always whole. So these two broken bits are unlikely to be, and it seems you took all the right precautions when you came back. Not sure I'm allowed to share their company's website but it's full of educational content which I have found helpful. If you Google bed bug experts in London they will probably show up.

I hope you've been able to relax a bit more since posting. You also know your DDs react to the bites so if they're bite free they're most likely not in your home. All the best

Thanks so much for your reassurance, advice and kind words! It has all been calm except discovering my DD having NINE bites on her bottom the night before last- they look very much like mosquito bites and I've read mozzies can bite repeatedly (so sincerely hoping it's this!!)
Not out of the woods yet but trying to remain positive and keep it in perspective a bit...x

Oh no @Megz80 not what you need! If on her bottom was it covered by clothes? Could it be heat rash? DCs have had suspicious bites all summer which has been so annoying for my anxiety but always turned out to be heatrash or mozzies. The last couple of weeks have been really bad for mozzies, I find them in every room of the house!

My dd has bottom bites. It's mozzies here

Megz80 · 15/09/2023 16:15

Def not heatrash- my other DD gets this a lot- I think mozzies....pretty sure she had PJ shorts on that night. There are lots of insects around...I read that mozzies can bite repeatedly until they find a proper meal.....hoping it's that 🙂
