Hello everyone,
Please can you help. I'm planning on moving to Manchester in a few months and I'm looking for a two bedroom house in an affordable nice area. I have friends in Denton and I am looking in that area, they have recently moved there and say it's okay. My question is are there other nice areas close to Denton and easy to get into the city that I should also be considering in my search? I don't have any young children and due to divorce my budget is quite small at around 180k. I would appreciate any advice for suitable areas or areas that are not far from Denton that are safe for a single woman to live in. Thank you!

I live not that far from Denton, other areas uou could try , Ashton ( under Lyne) the town center has a good indoor and outdoor market , quite a few pubs / restaurants, most of the big supermarkets and is very easy to get to Manchester City centre via bus or tram.
Or working you way towards Manchester try , Audenshaw, Droylsden, Clayton, Beswick.
Clayton is probably the cheapest place out of all of them and has the lowest council tax band.
However I don't know what the houseing market is like

Thanks Scott, I'm also looking for areas that are relatively safe, are the areas you mentioned safe for a single woman to walk around by herself, is there a lot of antisocial behaviour in these areas? I read that Ashton wasn't a very nice area with nothing to do, not sure if the reviews were from people who didn't like the area. Any comments appreciated 😀

Denton is also my neck of the woods. By walking around at night, do you mean as in walking from the bus stop home....or are you looking for a town with pubs/entertainment?. Ashton has had its issues in the town centre with antisocial stuff, think groups of teeneagers but im not sure what its like currently. I feel perfectly safe walking the dog at night / early morning around the area I live, but I steer clear of the town centres.

Hi Ilikewinter,
Thanks for your message. I mean walking from the bus stop, but finding a town with some night time activities would also be great.

Ah ok, so I would feel safe in Denton, Ashton, Audenshaw and probably Droylsden...although the town centre has become rather run down and there has been some issues around the tram stops - again, anti social behaviour. I cant really comment on night life, I tend to only goto the local pub...or ill drive to restuarants.

Okay so you'd advise against Droylsden in general? Or just avoid the town centre and tram? The other areas are okay on the tram line?

A couple of people from work live in Droylsden and they havent had any issues. The town centre is run down, but then many are these days!. The issues with the tram stops were in the news several months ago and it seems to randomly flare up every now and again. I wouldn't discount the area if you find a suitable house there.

Okay thanks so much for your thoughts and advice 😊

No probs, hope you manage to find something 🤞

I am also single female and have no problems walking around in the evening i have lived tound here for 20 years with very few problems but as @Ilikewinter said there has been flare ups every now and then but you find that in any town center.
But in any situation like that it's about been sensible, not been on your phone , pay attention to surroundings, know your route etc.
Droylsden is a bit of a ghost town but recently a few new bars have opened and if you like football the local team are right on your door step.
Also Heaton Park and Dasiy Nook are fairly near by and accessible by tram and bus .

Ripsinead · 27/07/2023 21:26

I would suggest any of them, Ashton does have a good market and shopping centre, Droylsden has a nice little square, Denton has plenty of shopping, the only one I wouldn't suggest is Dukinfield, it's very run down and depressing in parts.

Ripsinead · 27/07/2023 21:27

Guide bridge area around Ashton isn't great but there's a fast train straight to Piccadilly.

Try the Moravian area in Fairfield, it's beautiful , though likely to be expensive.
