Help please any techy people

I've done something dim to my laptop (have currently come down to dps monster pc in the basement to type this, instead od going about my housewifely duties in the kitchen with the laptop on).
I was typing a reply and held a key down for too long (I think it was return or space) didn't really look at the message that came up about holding it down too long and just clicked what I thought was cancel - but now I can't type anything. What have I done? How can I fix it?

In the bottom right hand corner of the screen do you have something that looks like a little clock but isn't the time iykwim. If you disconnect it or untick it, it is called something like quickkeys. It should work again.

Thank you Cgt. Rather annoyingly, dp has set the laptop to go into "sleep mode" if it's not used after a set time, so now it's gone to sleep and i can't type my password in to wake it up!
Never mind, it's obviously fate telling me to go and do something more productive
