Questio about removing peoples' updates on Facebook.

I have a facebook friend who I don't really know well, but am bombarded with tedious updates and invites to use their applications.

Is there anyway I can not receive their updates without removing them from the friends list?

This is one of the MANY reasons i've stayed away from the blooming thing

on the home page where you see the news feed - choose preferences
you can then choose to see less or more about people
