Without going into so much detail, imagine having a taxi booked by the Education department for you as a teacher to collect refugees from a hotel to take to your school for sessions as they have no school places. Imagine the person who booked it is called Mina Cook (an Asian lady who is married to a white man) You approach the taxi after getting a text that its near with three children and their dad is going to wave you off. You have been waiting since 9 and it's 940 as thetecwete issues getting a taxi. You are Asian so perhaps it looks like a family to the driver in hindsight. You wait for the driver to say the booking name as all taxi drivers have done for you for months for you to reply yes, but he doesn't so you say the destination instead, the name of your school , but he asks for a name, you say the name Mina Cook as you always do but the driver says no, you say your name in case its been amended, still no, you then say you have a text on your phone, but he doesnt have any interest in looking at your phone, you get out a post it with the booking number and taxi rank number that you wrote down for reference from the email and you show it but he says the taxi number is right but it doesnt mean the taxi is for you, you say it is and he shouts to stop talking over him. You suggest he ring the rank himself and say you're a teacher taking these children to school, you are wearing a school lanyard too. You say the name of the school again. He covers the screen inside saying you might be getting everything from there. He asks you for your number still covering the screen, he shouts and motions with you to slow down. Finally, he motions for you to get in but never explains what the issue was or apologies for being so rude. You wonder if he was expecting a white Tina Cook so thought you and the refugees were not a teacher and refugees, despite you showing lots of evidence that the taxi is yours. Noone speaks on the journey. The children don't know English but still refer to him as crazy man afterwards. You complain as you are so confused , upset and angry. You mention as a question was it because i was an Asian teacher and the children refugees not actually saying he was racist at all but wondering if he expected a white woman called Cook. The taxi firm say the name he had was Tina Cook. So it confirms to you that maybe you looked like a family and he was expecting a Tina Cook.
The taxi driver complains about you complaining. He thinks he was just being careful to get the right passenger. He is angry that you mentioned Asian teacher and refugees so you take that back in your complaint as you dont want to accuse anyone of racism but he is still angry you complained at all, he thinks he did nothing wrong.
What things do taxi drivers need to confirm a booking? Is the destination with the name with just one letter wrong ie Larry Smith instead of Barry Smith ok? Also other info was there too. No apology, no explanation and now playing the victim even when the mention of race was withdrawn.
