Braces... how long??

I know each person is different and braces can take anywhere between 6months and 3 years.. but...

How soon after your braces are put on will your teeth be aligned?

Meaning within a few weeks/months with they be straight? And then the braces are kept on for longer so they adjust to their new position

They only move a tiny bit at a time and the wire will be changed or adjusted many times before the teeth are in the correct position. Think it took about 2 years before dds were where they should be

After that you end up with retainers that need to be worn for a specified number of nights each week forever.

I have been told I only need to wear them for 9 months. So will it not be until 9 months that they are aligned? Or could they be aligned in a few months but I just have to keep them on for them to stay in that position?
