calling any americans???

Hi. I am moving to america before christmas and was wondering if you had any advice for me over settling into a new country. We are moving to the florida area as my dh is buying a motorcycle business.

I have two small children 2 and 1 year old. How do I find mums groups?? Do they have mums groups?? We have been looking at doing this for a long time, it has just come round rather fast and I realised that I need to know how to meet new people over there or I wil feel very isolated.

Any advice would be very appreciated. Thanks xxx

Pinkroses, Where in Florida will you be moving to?

One thing in the States(at least where I am from in Boston) is that there are not that many "drop in" groups like there are here in London. You usually have to sign up for a 10 or 12 week class, and they are a bit more pricey then here. And at some places(like the Y) you will have to join as a member to then take the classes(which you also pay for)Popular activities to do with toddlers are gymnastics, Gymboree, music classes and swimming. Search google for either a YMCA, YWCA or a Jewish Community Center in your area, all of these places are common around the USA and they are the ones who usually have classes for toddlers.

If you are religious, Churches are a great place to meet people, but keep in mind, most people who attand church are very religious in the USA!

Hi, pinkroses. There are 2 mumsnetters in Florida (no more as far as I know) - one is English, KateandtheGirls, she lives near Tampa I think - but she is away atm, she went for Thanksgiving so may be back soon. The other is called sunchowder, I think she's the other side near Orlando; she is American but her DH is English. I'm sure they'll both be able to help.

Thanks for the info. myermay that would be great. We are going to look for a nice area around orlando area. Think dh's business may be in Broward, by miami.....he is over in florida at the moment and I'm dealing with stuff this end....lucky me!!

pinkroses, good luck, keep us updated about what you are doing. If you have the energy you could always start a group up. I would love to go to the US for a few years.
