Is it a real gold necklace?

Took it to local jewellers and he couldn’t say conclusively and was concerned about ruining it.
it is a heavy i sh necklace and sinks in water. It hasn’t got a hallmark - only K18 which is unusual as not should be 18K! If my local jeweller can’t say for sure then where else can I look for advice?

as he has said, technically nothing that is not hall marked is gold an auctioneer would sell as yellow metal necklace with k18 mark it depends how heavy it is
it might be worth getting ot tested if it weighs 4-5g or more as that would be a decent amount of gold but it depends whether you want to wear it or sell it

Do you know where (which country) it was purchased in? Only ask as I have some gold jewellery from Saudi Arabia which isn’t hallmarked - but I know it’s a high carat.
jewellers can test it in an inconspicuous place - it shouldn’t ruin it.

Have you tried one of these 'gold' buying places.

Close to where i live there is a stall in the indoor market that is one of these gold /jewellery buyers/pawnbrokers.

I took some unmarked gold and they were able to test it for me there and then, there was no obligation for me to sell.

In fact with one of my items i was strongly advised to take it to auction as it was worth more than its weight (if that makes sense)

I'm allergic to any metal except gold. I could wear it for an hour or so and let you know if I've gone blotchy or not!

Tiny acid test near the catch will tell you. I can't see how it would ruin it.

If it's a base metal that's been plated then it's likely to attract a magnet. However not attracting a magnet doesn't mean it is gold (as could be gold plate on silver). So magnet test. If magnet attaches it 100% not gold. If magnet doesn't attract do a gold test (kit is about the £8 mark off Amazon) test in an inconspicuous place.
