Ciao - Everybody Welcome.

OP posts:
Rosa · 21/02/2008 20:05

I think that it might . Talking to the mums I know many rely on what mamma said. WHen I mention what I chat about or where I heard about x /y they are interested. Dh and I are having a BPA discussion at the mo as Dd still has Milk first thing in an Avent bottle he said mumsnet ??? I think that Italy is opening up so much more now computerwise but it would need 'guidance on usage ' Franca , Hot what do you reckon ?

I think that I - as well - thought that an Italian mn could - maybe - work. we should talk to mn tower . I was thinking at least about a good website with things to do with children/where to go, etc ...
I should go out tonight, to a 40 yrs old birthday celebration (of a friend who obviously doesn't have kids), but I'm tiiiiired...

hotHELL · 21/02/2008 20:57

do people in italy have such easy access to the net? my italian friends use their pediatra if they have questions, i use mumsnet! it certainly does sound like an interesting idea..
rosa what about organising english sessions for little ones? italian parents might be keen...
have you seen the new Moretti movie?
very tired too....
rosa and bran when are you going to try for no 2?
Bran will speak to hospital about cvs next week..

Rosa · 22/02/2008 08:09

Right guys lets get e mailing each other !!!Hot Dh and I are not taking care if it happens it does and we will be happy . Then when I loose another 5kg we will try su serio if nothing has happened before..... I had a milestone birthday and so it has to be soon or never !!!!!
Vado a Pilates now - There is a THICK nebbia here I cannot see further than 20m. Should be going to a 1st birthday party this pm but if it stays like this then we will be going nowhere as it is on the Guidecca 40 min boat ride away and I doubt boats are going !

No n°2 likely here, alas, DP doesn't want any more "because they cost too much" and he already has another one anyway. Not my opinion but I can't face the arguments and he wasn't a whole lot of help in pg/early days as his attitude was "l'hai voluta tu" (I nearly chucked him out on a few occasions). Plus I'm getting on so not sure i'd be able to have one anyway.

Rosa, if you're up for it then so am I. Do you think the MNtowers crew have dayjobs too? Should we propose a franchise? Might be better for promotion as the Italians tend to like all things inglese. We could get Franca to translate.

Brangelina · 22/02/2008 13:55

Gosh, it sounds so romantic to have a party on Giudecca...

Abena · 22/02/2008 18:30

Hi sorry to butt in but I just thought I would tell you that I found Mandybagpuss the other mum in Milan with twins who had posted a request for playmates. Also thanks Brangelina for the link to find a babysitter as I got one although I am a bit nervous of getting someone off the Internet who could be ANYONE! Not scared of a psycho just maybe someone who doesn't know how to look after little ones. In answer to Gio I had an interview for a primary school teaching job but havent heard and it was on Tuesday. I stopped work to have my babies and maybe I came across as NUTTY in the interview as I dont get to meet many people.Ciao!

Rosa · 22/02/2008 18:54

Abena, glad you found somebody and hope the interview went ok ...Let us know how it went and hope you stay on this thread as well !!
Brangelina I think we should think seriously...
Party on Guidecca was ok - andata tutto ok then the fog came up so we did a runner round 6ish as there was only 1 type of boat going ( with radar) , Mind you I said to dh I can cope with a night in the Cipriani if we get stuck or even the Hilton Molino Stuky no problem room with a view of course !!!!! you couldn't see 5 m in front of you no joke

PippiCalzelunghe · 23/02/2008 14:51

ciao. haven't read any past post yet. just wanted to say this: it's 12 degrees sunny and lovely and all kids are covered up as if they are going skiing: hat, scarves, gloves, tuta da sci... !

my brother laptopn is funny apologies for mistakes. off to read posts now.

PippiCalzelunghe · 23/02/2008 15:18

read it. think italian mumsnet could work. maybe slowly but I don't see why not.

btw I can have scan, tampone e letter for flying from good gynec all for £100. Only the scan was £200 at least so I'm very happy. can't wait to see dd2 again, hope everything is well.

poor dh is in an extreme situation... the house is a mess. and like in grand design the costs are spiralling: rooms needs to be completely replastered (bloody lining paper) etc. old story.

really happy you're doing that obstetrician course franca:good luck!

Rosa · 23/02/2008 19:08

Glad all is ok in Pg Pippi- It was 0 degrees about 3 days ago and yesterday between fog it got to 10..So I am a guilty one for sending dd out covered up but we also have the nebbia here which is horrible. Just done party No2 for the w/e so thats enough for me I am pizette out !

I think it's a good idea re Italian site, keep us posted....
I use my pedatrician a lot here but also use MN, I think they complement each other well.
Franca rents in Rome are ridiculous. EVen the periferie are stupid prices. 1100 for a 2 bed apartment there, 1400 in the central areas. We debated moving out but at the moment we don't have or need a car, if we moved out we would and so would probably spend us much in the long run with added car expenses. You have to move a good hour commute outside Rome, Viterbo etc before the prices come down significantly. At the moment dp has a 20 min commute on the metro and neither of us want him to have to spend 3 hours a day commuting. I dont know how average Italian salaries can afford it though, the wages in Rome are so low and the unemployment the usual high. We can only contemplate it because I work with a UK organisation and am paid reasonably well.
Franca have you bought in Milan or are you renting? What are the average salaries and rents there?
Rosa it sounds so romantic when you talk about living in Venice, even the fog sounds romantic, am sure it's not day to day to but it's making me want to plan a weekend there,
Pippi, glad you got the scans etc sorted

Rosa · 24/02/2008 08:23

Gio - your situation sounds so much like ours ! Venice rents are high and they are moving more and more toward tourist rents so few long term agreements 'for residents' available. The city is becoming more and more of a hotel / resort. The smaller shops like food , hardware every day use are being forced out of the San Marco area and instead of opening in other areas they are shutting. I try to support the market and local shops as much as I can but its true if you can do 1 big shop a week in a supermarket you save money.
WIth my Uk salary I supported us for a good few years but now we are on dh salary and its ok but it could be better. Many people are moving to the mainland simply as they cannot afford to buy or rent. Dh is a true Venetian and wants his children to grow up in Venice not mestre or other areas which have high crime rates and accom on the main bus / train routes to Vce are just as high !
Gio You do not want to come to Venice just now. I cannot see the campanile that is less than 50m away . It is very thick - vaporetti and planes will be fermi I think ! Buona Domenica tutti .. I must try to stop posting long posts!

Ciao a tutte!

I've never posted here but I've followed the thread for a bit - and finding it pretty useful and entertaining! So I guess it's time for me to introduce myself. I am a Milanese (but born in Rome..) now living in North London. I have a 16-week old baby....

Any tips on bilinguismo and more generally bringing up a half-Italian kid in the UK very welcome...

I think the idea of an Italian mumsnet is really good! In the meantime, you may want to check other websites - I use Italiansonline.net which also has a section called "Minitalians". The site is mainly aimed at Italian expats but those of you living in Italy may also find it useful!

gemmamc · 24/02/2008 09:49

volevo dire:
www.italiansonline.net

francagoestohollywood · 24/02/2008 10:53

Ciao a tutte, ciao gemma and welcome .
Gemma, I'm a Milanese as well, and we have just moved back after 8 yrs in the UK. Both me and dh are Italian, so we spoke Italian at home with the dc. In order to them to get familiarized with English we sent them to nursery when they were around 12-15 months (starting with 2 mornings a week, then 2 full days etc). When we left England they were almost fully bilingual (my eldest having been at school for 1 yr, he'll be six in july). f your dh is English then the norm is for each parent to speak to the baby in their mother tongue.
Gio: prices are high in Milan as well, especially for buying. Central areas go from 7000 to 12.000 plus euros per square metres. We are renting at the moment in a semicentral area (20 mins walk to the duomo) and we are "squeezed" in 90 square metres, but my philosophy is to privilege the location rahter than the size . Salaries vary. I have friends who earn very well and friends who earn nothing compared to their "preparazione" and the amount of time they have studied and specialized. Things must have changed a lot in Rome, I remember that until 10 yrs ago it was much cheaper than milan, for things like eating out, food etc.
Pippi, I'm glad you are all sorted with the scan etc. Not sure I'll do the corso, I'm going to the open day in 2 weeks time, to see if it's feasable or I'm just scema... meanwhile I'm doing some research job for a friend...
and ds has a temperature. uffa.

hotHELL · 24/02/2008 16:28

Franca what is the difference between a midwife and an ostetrica?
Glad pippi you sorted out the scan and you will have a certificate to come back.
Bran your dp sounds like an interesting sort of guy, but it is true that having only 1 kid has 100s of advantages, and the more pregnant i get the more i see them, lol.
Rosa which district of Venice do you want to buy in?
Sunny day in london today, after uniform greyness.
Ds has watched soooo much telly, but to fill a whole day with activities is impossible.
I was thinking what is the key to mumsnet, what makes it successfull, and i do think because it is the only site that i ahve come across where are some clever, witty, unsightful women, many other sites mainly seem to have morons from what i could see.

Rosa · 25/02/2008 12:22

Ciao Gemma,
16 week and you have time to mumsnet I think i was still on the sleeping stage then - I can't remember. Thanks for the link I am a brit in Italy but alayws looking for something new to web on. Glad you found the courage to join us .Isn't the ostetrica midwife the same thing or is ostricia the dottore bit ? I liked my ostetrica tons more than my doctor to be honest.
Well a bit less fog today but it is so cold .
Gio how is your ds is he better now runny tummy and all ?
I am looking for a Non BPA ( that dodgy plastic) Italian bottle - anybody have any ideas. DD still likes her milk ( age 2 I know) first thing she will straw / cup all other drinks but not that one.
Hot what are you doing cvs wise ?

OP posts:
hotHELL · 25/02/2008 12:43

hi rosa, i am having the first scan at 11 week and then will try to wangle a free cvs out of the hospital.

Rosa · 25/02/2008 13:19

Good stuff so not long to scan then you must be nearly there now ?
Just put heating on boy its cold ...or rather damp !

OP posts:
hotHELL · 25/02/2008 13:31

lovely day here in london..
not long left no, already pretty fed up though ....
i thought an ostetrica was more qualified than a midwife, but i don't know..
it always surprises me how little british midwifes know (no offence to any midwifes reading this thread, maybe just the ones i have met seem a bit clueless and constantly moaning)

Rosa · 25/02/2008 13:46

I never saw a MW when I was in the Uk only the gp as teh MW was full and as I wasn't 'her' paitent I saw the Gp !! I saw doc here monthly ( obstetrician at Euro 80 a go !!!) and had scan monthly included . Blood tests monthly but they costed less as you went along . Costly but I felt ok with it all. Diddnt particularly like doc is/ was in theory a better one and he did cvs in his surgery . Was glad he was not there when I gave birth as the mw in Italy was fab and really encouraging!

OP posts:
hotHELL · 25/02/2008 13:56

Did you choose to see a private obstetrician or you had no choice?
To make us feel good about weight gain in pregnancy my midwife told me that apparently the nhs only starts to worry if women reach 90kgs during their pregnancy! lol
