Suprise wedding

Do you think there is any chance of this working?

Ive had the idea of getting married over the christmas period.

Ceremony would just be us and very close friends and family then throwing a huge suprise party where nobody knew and then making it a big suprise when I come in in my dress?

What do you think?

Excuuuuuuuuuuuse me I thought you had booked this for next year? What's going on?

Hulababy · 22/11/2004 14:56

If you do decide to do the telling people it's a wedding at short notice, is there a way of preparing them for the party first? The the wedding suprise could come later - maybe just the week before or something?

I still like the idea of the suprise wedding though. I'd love to turn up to a party and find out it was even more special. Romantic at heart you see

You can ask people to dress up regardless anyway - just say you are having a Christmas party with a twist - and that the dress code is smart, or black tie if that's what you prefer.

hunkermunker · 22/11/2004 14:57

You know your guests, so you have more idea of whether it'll be a lovely surprise for them or a bit of a 'well, I didn't expect that!"

I just know that if I'd done this, people wouldn't have made the effort to come that they do when it's a wedding - parties are more informal and 'turn up whenever' than weddings.

My wedding day would've been a constant round of 'Hello dear, you look nice' 'Yes, we got married' 'Ooh, did you, nobody said, I'm so embarrassed I'm not wearing my best hat/haven't brought you a wedding present/turned up three hours late!!' We'd have been explaining the day to latecomers all the time. But if you have punctual happy-go-lucky type friends and rellies, go for it!

Hulababy · 22/11/2004 14:57

Why not get married at the location of the party? Then no one misses out on the marriage as well.

spacemonkey · 22/11/2004 14:58

I can't see the point in telling people at short notice. I'd freak out if someone did that to me, and run around like a fool tearing my hair out about what to wear and presents. Better to make it a complete secret or not at all imo

Hulababy · 22/11/2004 14:59

Or get someone to video record the ceremony earlier in day, quickly download it onto video cassette - and have that playing as your party guests arrive - with big suprise signs up.

maomao · 22/11/2004 15:00

I agree with SM---I don't think you can really do it half way.

When we did this, people were very kind and thoughtful, and actually sent us gifts after the fact.

spacemonkey · 22/11/2004 15:01

How did you do it maomao? I do think a surprise wedding sounds so romantic and lovely

PeckaRollover · 22/11/2004 15:30

Hulababy · 22/11/2004 16:26

confetti.com has planning pages, etc. Their checklist includes:

your wedding dress
other outfits (groom and bridesmaid/page)
photography and videography
transport
venue
marquees
food and drink
wedding cake
entertainment
honeymoons and weddings abroad

maomao · 22/11/2004 16:27

There's also an american site called theknot.com --- dunno if that might be of use to you

Hulababy · 22/11/2004 16:28

You could always make your own invite cards - I know lots of people who have and they look lovely. As yours is a suprise though, don't forget to just make them Christmassy with a twist, rather than a wedding!

Peckarollover you definitely have to do it, sounds fab, I wanted to run away to Gretna (naf I know, but someone has to!) and then have a big party...did the traditional thing in the end, but in many ways my fun side sooo wishes I'd gone with my first thoughts...go for it and have the best day of your life

popsycal · 22/11/2004 19:20
