At a pub quiz recently there was a round on each decade since the 60's.

60's we scored 14/20
70's 16/20
80's 20/20
90's 6/20
00's 0/20

This performance, combined with a newspaper article which said that you need to keep doing and experiencing new things to keep your brain young and to stay in touch and to fend off the dreaded Alzheimers made me realise that 2008 was the time to listen to some new stuff. What should it be?

Start by listening to the radio a lot
then buy what you like!

dinny · 05/01/2008 20:24

Arctic Monkeys are really good

MrsWednesday · 05/01/2008 20:25

And if you like Artic Monkeys then try Reverend and the Makers too.

yogabird · 05/01/2008 20:26

Countess, there;s not much music on radio 4 and i do like that a lot I put Radio 1 on in the car the other day but felt like my granny when she used to say it's just noise and shouting adn you can't hear the words!!!
Just off to youtube to check out the arctic monkeys - doesn;t gordon brown like them?

You're gonna have to give us a bit of help: from the decades you DO know, what do you like? Then we will know what to recommend perhaps?

bunnyhunny · 05/01/2008 20:29

try radio 6 - on digital, or on sky
I hear loads of good music on there, but I never remember to buy it

Minum · 05/01/2008 20:29

Kasabian - try the Empire CD
Kooks - Seaside
Kaiser Chiefs - Yours truly angry mob
Killers - Sams town

4Ks - spooky [grin[

karen999 · 05/01/2008 20:31

Goldfrapp, Scissor Sisters, Coldplay are all good bands...

Gursky · 05/01/2008 20:31

Muse, Editors

But instead of finding these depressed young men profound as I used to, they make me giggle. I still enjoy the music though!

But defo get the Killers' first album first, cos it's a classic...

I'd also recommend Ray LaMontagne - he's my gravelly Americana hero of choice at the moment....

Two ways as well as radio - to find out what you like is to buy a magazine with a CD included (eg Mojo, Uncut, Mixmag (does that still exist?) all kind of different genres) or look for women's/home mags that sometimes include them as a freebie. And also maybe use something like iTunes to get quick trials of songs, browse genres, dig out other people's playlists and then you can buy/download single tunes quite cheaply... IMHO iTunes is brilliant for music newbies cos you can try EVERYTHING and anything...

I would suggest:
Duffy - welsh girl,Dusty springfield ish
Band of Horses - american ,guitars, tiny bit neil young
Joe Lean and the jing jang jong - excellent british guitar pop
Sons and Daughters- scottish,have v gd 2nd album out,v distinctive sound(loudish)
also,Robert Plant and Alison Krauss album Raising Sand- really really good.
If you go to you tube there are usually clips of any artists,so you can try before you buy...
