At a pub quiz recently there was a round on each decade since the 60's.

60's we scored 14/20
70's 16/20
80's 20/20
90's 6/20
00's 0/20

This performance, combined with a newspaper article which said that you need to keep doing and experiencing new things to keep your brain young and to stay in touch and to fend off the dreaded Alzheimers made me realise that 2008 was the time to listen to some new stuff. What should it be?

I like quite a few of the ones on your list (but katie melua...?!)
I am not at all up to date with music, got into the Pixies about a decade too late for example.
I really like Franz Ferdinand - v reminiscent of 80s stuff to my mind.
I also like Hot Chip who are more dancey these days but their first album was really good electro-pop.
I was at the Scottish meet-up and one of their tracks was playing really loud - it as exhilarating (I think everyone else was having a wee tut-tut though )
PJ Harvey is a goddess.

Heathcliffscathy · 05/01/2008 21:47

mostly this year i am recommending the arcade fire, hot chip, amy winehouse, rufus wainwright

PrismManchip · 05/01/2008 21:48

ah another Hot Chip fan
I love them! (First album though..so eighties somehow)

Monkeybird · 05/01/2008 21:54

ah yes, OBVIOUSLY : Wainwright, Winehouse, Eels and Polyphonic Spree.

Can't stand Arcade Fire meself - all that over-emoting... Would give Placebo a swerve too but takes all sorts!

Loving FischerSpooner (think Human League, but kind of 'now'...) and the Flaming Lips (think REM but a bit more, er smiley...)

havalina · 06/01/2008 12:12

Not a fan of the arcade fire myself, can't put my finger on why but they just irritate the life out of me, and the fact that they are so hyped.

Hecate · 06/01/2008 16:46

what about Angelis?

SheikYerbouti · 06/01/2008 16:49

Don;t listen to Katie Melua. Just don't

Monkeybird · 06/01/2008 16:52

Nor Clannad. Not if you want some respectability with musos . Everything else on your list you can just about get away with!

Sorry, being evil but i've had enough of school holidays today!

listen to lots of radio shows. radio 2 is quite good and radio london has a show on saturday nights which always covers new music. (you can listen online).

MissingMyHeels · 06/01/2008 16:58

We Are Scientists is a good album. Mr Hudson and the Library are going to be really big this year and Remy Nicole. If you like more dance-y stuff try Groove Armada or Basement Jaxx.

Maybe try reading some music magazines, NME, Q etc.

MaryAnnSingleton · 06/01/2008 16:59

Are you in London ? because I listen to Robert Elms in the afternoons (12-30 bbc Radio London and get lots of ideas from there.)
I recommend
Arcade Fire
Au Revoir Simone
Killers
Jenny Lewis & the Watson Twins
Super Furry Animals/ Gruff Rhys
Caesaria Evora
Madeleine Peyroux
Cansei de Ser Sexy (beware explicit lyrics) - esp Music is my hot hot sex
Camera Obscura
Lemon Jelly
Stereolab
