I fyou have got young kids I would heartily receommend Wells-next-the-sea...lovely beach, lots of steam trains, crabbing on the cock and loads to do if the weather is less than clement (as it was for us last year!!!)

Lovely fish and chips too

My ds cried when we left.....

In order listed, not just considering location.
Bury St. Edmonds: not so great, bit of a grotty town.
Blythborough: best of these locations. Least driving to get anywhere interesting.
Hacheston & East Green: middle of nowhere, will need car to go anywhere, though, with all of them.
I have 3+one expected and no way I'd go on holiday with them, either, and I'm not even a single parent. But good luck, hope it goes well.

Glad you turned down Norfolk, I live here and it's nice but it's an 1-2 hours more driving each way from Kent.

flack · 06/01/2008 10:13

Sorry, I mean ONLY considering location, didn't compare prices or other.

oh, it sucks. usually 1/2 up front and other 1/2 within a few weeks or at latest at the start of the month when you are going.

MaryAnnSingleton · 06/01/2008 13:54

that's a pain harman - which was it ? Dh says Blythburgh is nearer to get to coast- Walberswick/Southwold etc...East Green isn't really in middle of nowhere..it would take about 20 mins to drive, prob les.
Have you looked at Westleton ? or Wenhaston - both very nice villages - Westleton prob. more suitable and really nr seaside - my friends go every year and rent cottage there (from Suffolk Secrets)- shop and nice pub by village green.

good luck - really hope you can find something suitable. Did you check out Aldeburgh too ? I suppose because these are trendy places to go they reckon they can rack the prices up - not fair at all.

PMSL at 'Norfolk people are legendarily fab and friendly'...whaaaaaaaaattt?

Having grown up partly in Norwich - admittedly at the time when you couldn't get a train directly to London - honestly, it was like living before the electrification of the Soviet Union or something - one of the few kids in my class who hadn't been born in the local hospital, and regularly having the crap beaten out of me for being foreign/posh, there is absolutely no bloody way I'd go back to the freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeezing Narrrrrrrrfolk coasts for a holiday. Nooooo way.

DarthVader · 06/01/2008 15:48

Admittedly I am neither foreign nor posh but we always find the people of Norfolk more welcoming and friendly than anywhere else I have ever stayed in the UK.

Give it another go, MI, don't let your childhood put you off!

I DARE YOU!

motherinferior · 06/01/2008 16:12

But it's so cold. Whenever I go and see my parents in Norwich (which appears admittedly to have improved since the Jurassic period when I grew up) it's freezing.

There are more black people than in the days when my Indian mother was racially harrassed out of her teaching post, I'll freely admit.

harman, what you can do with C4U (only on the phone) is say you will send a cheque for the deposit; that will hold the cottage for you and give you 3 days-ish to get some money together from somewhere and then you could pay by card.

No chance of a smaller deposit I'm afraid (I work there)

Also apols for you being unable to get through, this is the busiest time of year anyway plus the websites are playing up so people who would normally book online are ringing in as well.

It is worth hanging on though, it's only 1½p a minute on a Sunday and you will get through eventually - most people put their phones on speaker and go off and do something else, it's quite funny sometimes when we say hello as we'll hear someone galloping to get back to the phone before we give up on them!

bookwormmum · 06/01/2008 16:22

MI - it's not much warmer in Suffolk. I swear that you can feel the temperature dropping as you drive up the A12/M11. Get there, put on 3 more jumpers and a fleecy hat... in summer.

Unless the sun comes out of course in which case, it's suddenly too hot . Can't win really .

WendyWeber · 06/01/2008 16:24

Are your initials AG btw? I need to message you on FB...

Tutter · 06/01/2008 16:26

oh cod goes there all the time

SilentTerror · 06/01/2008 16:30

We alternate between North Norfolk and Suffolk each year.
Love both, especially Holt in Norfolk and Southwold and Aldeburgh in Suffolk.
Loads for families in both areas.

bury st edmUnds is not grotty, it is nice

aldeburgh and southwold are nice, most of north norfolk coast is astonishingly nice and you can meet the seals etc

I live in suffolk which adds to the niceness of course, and went to school in norfolk

but almost all native east anglians are STRANGE - I am the exception. I still cannot understand very strong suffolk or norfolk accents.

Vacua · 07/01/2008 11:46

also everything is almost always closed when you need it

MaryAnnSingleton · 07/01/2008 11:52

well done Harman - do go to Dunwich - very atmospheric - saw a seal there too and the Flora tearooms have lovely fish and chips, right on the beach !
